1. A method of treating a subterranean particulate formation to alter the relative mobilities of oil and water in and through the formation comprising contacting the formation with a branched organic polymer dissolved or dispersed in an aqueous carrier fluid in an amount sufficient to provide a concentration of from about 0.005 to about 1 percent by volume of said carrier fluid and for a period of time sufficient for the polymer to absorb on or otherwise attached to the formation, the branched organic polymer having a molecular weight of from about 900 to about 50,000,000 and having the structural formula:

  • ##STR63## wherein;

    v is in the range of from about 10 to about 15,000;

    w is in the range of from about 1 to about 5,000;

    z is in the range of from about 2 to about 10,000; and

    A- is an anion or anionic group associated with the quaternary nitrogen.
