1. In an ultrasonic diagnostic imaging system, including an annular array transducer of concentric piezoelectric elements for transmitting ultrasonic energy into tissue to be imaged and for receiving echoes from said tissue;

  • apparatus comprising;

    a plurality of transducer pulsers, each having an output coupled to a respective element of said transducer for exciting said elements, and having respective inputs; and

    means, coupled to said inputs of said pulsers, for selecting from a plurality of predetermined activating signals, a time sequence of activating signals for a single transmit period which focuses the energy transmitted by ones of said elements at a given tissue depth, said selected signals exhibiting one of a plurality of predetermined characteristic waveforms for exciting said elements at one of a plurality of transmission frequencies, which frequency is variable as a function of said tissue depth,wherein said selected activating signals are applied to respective ones of said pulser inputs.
