First Claim
1. In a electrosurgical generator for performing an electrosurgical operation which requires a periodically interrupted waveform, said generator having output circuitry for connection to a patient and means controllable by an operating surgeon for selecting said electrosurgical operation, the improvement comprising:
- power amplifier means responsive to said selecting means for selectively generating a periodically interrupted rectangular waveform with a fundamental frequency, duty cycle, current and voltage suitable for performing said electrosurgical operation; and
filter means responsive to said rectangular waveform for converting said rectangular waveform to an output waveform suitable for performing said electrosurgical operation and for providing said ouput waveform to said output circuitry, said filter acting as a voltage doubler and producing an output wave form having a peak voltage equal to twice the peak voltage of said rectangular waveform.

Abstract
A solid-state electrosurgical generator is disclosed which provides three separate output circuits that may be operated from a single common power source. One of the output circuits produces an output electrical waveform which is optimized for cutting and coagulation with monopolar electrodes. Another source provides a waveform which is optimized for cutting and coagulation with bipolar electrodes. The other electrosurgical source produces an output electrical waveform which is optimized for fulguration. The output circuits produce the optimized waveforms by appropriately processing electrical power provided by a D.C. power source. In order to do this, the output circuits may be connected to the power source by means of four semiconductor switches which may be arranged in either a bridge configuration for one output circuit or in a series arrangement for the other output circuit. The switches are, in turn, controlled by a timing circuit which provides different timing waveforms to the switches depending on their configuration.

a D.C. power source; -
output electrodes for connection to a patient; a plurality of switches connected in a bridge configuration having four arms, one of said switches being located in each arm; a bandpass filter having an input and having an output connected to said output electrodes; a transformer having a primary winding and having a secondary winding connected to said input of said filter; and means for generating timing signals to alternately operate pairs of said switches in diagonally-opposite arms to connect said primary winding to said power source. - View Dependent Claims (5, 6, 7)

8. An electrosurgical generator for performing electrosurgical operation comprising,
a D.C. power source; -
bipolar output electrodes for connection to a patient; monopolar output electrodes for connection to patient; a plurality of switches connected in a bridge configuration having four arms, one of said switches being located in each arm; a first bandpass filter having an input and having an output connected to said bipolar output electrodes; a second bandpass filter having an input and having an output connected to said monopolar electrodes; a first transformer having a primary winding and a secondary winding connected to said input of said first filter; a second transformer having a primary winding and a secondary winding connected to said input of said second filter; and means for selectively connecting said first transformer winding and said second transformer winding to said switch bridge; and means for generating timing signals to alternately operate pairs of said switches in diagonally-opposite arms to connect said first primary winding and said second primary winding to said power source. - View Dependent Claims (9, 10, 11)
