1. Electrostatic diagnostic apparatus for an operating gas turbine engine, comprising:
- electrostatic signal means, including a probe to be disposed in the gas stream of an engine, for providing, when said probe is disposed in the gas stream of an operating engine, a probe signal having a waveshape defined by amplitude variations thereof across a time interval of a given duration in response to electrostatic charge flowing in the gas stream in the vicinity of said probe;
speed means connected for response to the rotary speed of said engine to provide a speed signal indicative thereof;
signal processing means connected for response to said electrostatic signal means and to said speed means, responsive to said speed signal for providing a threshold signal indicative of a threshold amplitude as a function of the rate of change of speed of the engine, and for providing a signal indicative of the characteristics of amplitude variations in said probe signal in response to said amplitude variations exceeding said threshold amplitude.

Abstract
A voltage threshold utilized (FIG. 8) to recognize signals of interest provided by probes (1, 2, 3) of a gas turbine engine for analysis of waveshapes (FIGS. 57-80) indicative of the engine event causing the signals, includes an acceleration component (FIGS. 3 and 4), whereby to avoid collecting records of signals related only to normal acceleration and deceleration, without masking abnormal signals which occur with acceleration or deceleration.
