Abstract

An information while drilling apparatus and method for characterizing strata in the vicinity of a drill bit at the lower end of a drill string, including a down-hole module unit and surface receiving and control units. Excitation currents are caused to pass through the drill string, drill bit and surrounding strata and the current flowing through the drill bit is sensed by a first toroidal transformer that encircles the drill string immediately above the drill bit. The sensed current, which characterizes the strata adjacent to and below the drill bit, is detected to form logging signals. A second toroidal transformer couples the logging signals to the electrically conductive drill string for transmission to the surface receiving unit. The frequency of the excitation current is adjustable to permit characterization of the strata at various distances from the drill bit. The frequency of the transmitting signal is also adjustable to compensate for varying degrees of signal attenuation along the transmission path. Control of the excitation and transmission frequencies is effected by communications from the surface control unit in response to stored operating instructions or operator inputs.

Claims

1. Information while drilling apparatus for detecting electrical data reflective of geological conditions generally ahead of a drill bit in a well and communicating such data to ground surface via an electrically conductive drill string comprising:

excitation source means for inducing alternating electrical excitation currents to flow through earth strata surrounding the drill bit;

an elongated, electrically conductive, cylindrical module forming a drill collar means connected in the drill string proximate said drill bit at the lower end of said drill string having,

a passive current sensing means disposed at the lower end of said module for detecting excitation currents flowing to and from earth strata generally adjacent to and ahead of the drill bit through said drill bit and for developing corresponding logging signals,

a first detecting means responsive to said logging signals and

operative to develop corresponding first data signals, and a first signal coupling means for coupling said first data signals into said drill string; and

communication means coupled to said drill string for receiving said first data signals;

a bi-directional remote coupler means including, an electrically conductive cylindrical coupler housing forming a part of said conductive drill string above the module;

a remote relay toroidal transformer means encircling a cross-sectional area coaxially within said coupler housing and having one lead of its toroidal winding electrically connected to said coupler housing;

an insulated conductor of predetermined length electrically connected between the other lead of the toroidial winding and a wiper contactor contacting said module at a point below said first signal coupling means, said first signal coupling means inducing said data signals in said insulated conductor, said conductor communicating the data signals to said remote relay toroidal transformer means which in turn couples said data signals into said drill string.

2. Information while drilling apparatus as recited in claim 1 wherein said excitation source means is located on ground surface proximate the well and includes:

an electrical current generator for inducing the alternating electrical excitation currents in earth strata generally ahead of the drill bit,

electrode means buried in the earth'"'"'s surface at a location distant from the well coupling the generator to said earth strata; and

means coupling the upper end of said drill string to said generator to provide a return path for said excitation curents, and

wherein said generator includes means for selectively inducing alternating electrical excitation currents variable over a range of frequencies and amplitudes.

Information while drilling apparatus as recited in claim 1 wherein said passive sensing means encircles a cross-sectional area at the lower end portion of said module such that excitation currents flow through that cross-sectional area and induce corresponding logging signals in said sensing means.

4. Information while drilling apparatus as recited in claim 3 wherein said module further includes

a second excitation source means at another position spaced down string in the module from said transformer means

for inducing localized alternating electrical logging currents in the strata surrounding the lower end of said drill string, said localized currents also flowing through said drill bit and said module.

5. Information while drilling apparatus as recited in claim 4 wherein said second excitation source means includes means for generating localized logging currents having frequencies selectable over a predetermined range.

6. Information while drilling apparatus as recited in claim 5 wherein the selection of the frequency of the localized logging currents generated by said second excitation source means is controlled by said module control means.

7. Information while drilling apparatus as recited in claim 1 wherein said module further includes

sensor means for monitoring various down-hole conditions and parameters and for developing a second set of corresponding logging signals for input to said first detecting means for developing a second set of corresponding data signals.

8. Information while drilling apparatus as recited in claim 7 wherein said excitation source means also induces alternating electrical control signal currents flowing through said earth strata and the module, and

wherein said module further includes module control means responsive to said control signal currents and operative to control transmission of said first data signals and said second data signals.

9. Information while drilling apparatus as recited in claim 8 wherein said module control means establishes frequency and phase of the data signals coupled into the drill string.

Information while drilling apparatus as recited in claim 9 wherein said module control means further includes sounding means for determining a resonant frequency for transmission of alternating electrical current signals via the drill string and means for inducing alternating electrical carrier signal currents in the drill string at such resonant frequency.

Information while drilling apparatus as recited in claim 10 wherein said communication means includes sounding means for ascertaining an optimum transmission frequency of electrical current signals via the drill string including the module and drill bit and for causing the excitation source means to induce the control signal currents at said optimum frequency.

12. Information while drilling apparatus as recited in claim 11 wherein the sounding means of both the communicating means and the module control means each include:

means for sweeping a range of frequencies with the particular signal currents induced in the drill string, and

means sensing amplitude of the respective signal currents induced for finding the maximum amplitude current signal induced in the range of frequencies swept, the frequency of the sensed maximum amplitude current signal being the resonant and the optimum frequency of the carrier and the control signal currents respectively.

13. Information while drilling apparatus as recited in claim 12 further including:

turbine means positioned within said module and driven by drilling fluid flowing through said drill string,

power generating means driven by said turbine for generating electrical power,

battery means located within the module also for supplying electrical power,

means for regulating and filtering electrical power from said power generating means and said battery means so that it is suitable for use by electrical logic circuits within said down-hole module, and

switching means for selecting between said power generating means and said battery as the source of electrical power for said module depending upon a threshold level of power generation by the generating means.

14. Information while drilling apparatus as recited in claim 9 wherein said first detecting means includes:

first receiver means coupled to the output of said first current sensing means for processing said logging signals,

first transmitting means coupled to the output of said first receiver means and operative to generate said first data signals, and

wherein said first signal coupling means includes;

a toroidal transformer means disposed to encircle a cross-sectional area coaxially within said module at a position spaced from said current sensing means and serving to electromagnetically couple data signals between said first transmitting means and said drill string.

Information while drilling apparatus as recited in claim 14 wherein said module further includes a module excitation source located above the first current sensing means for inducing localized electrical excitation currents in the strata below and surrounding the lower end of said drill string, said localized excitation currents also flowing through said drill bit and said housing.

16. Information while drilling apparatus as recited in claim 15 wherein said module excitation source includes means responsive to the module control means for selectively inducing, within a range of frequencies, localized excitation currents of a particular frequency.

Information while drilling apparatus as recited in claim 1 and further comprising additional bi-directional remote coupler means each sequentially positioned above the others on said drill string with the wiper contactor of each remote coupler means being disposed below the transformer means of the next lower remote coupler means.

In a telemetry system utilizing toroidal transformer means to induce comunicative currents into a electrically conductive drill string, and one or more relay means disposed along said drill string for relaying the communicative signals upward and control signals downward, an improved bi-directional relay means comprising:

an electrically conductive cylindrical member disposed along and forming a part of said drill string

a passive relay toroidal transformer means encircling said cylindrical member and having one lead of its toroidal winding electrically connected to said drill string;

an insulated conductor of predetermined length extending down the internal passageway of said drill string establishing an electrical connection between the other lead of said toroidal winding and a contactor means disposed beneath a down-string toroidal transformer means, whereby the down-string transformer means induce communicative signals in said conductor, such signals flowing through the windings of said passive relay transformer means which in turn induces a corresponding communicative signal in said drill string, and whereby an up-string toroidal transformer means induces a control signal in the drill string sensed by the passive relay toroidal transformer means which induces signals in the insulated conductor that is sensed by the down-string toroidal transformer means.
