Abstract

Pressure sensing diaphragms comprise a cylindrical or spherical crystalline member in which an internal cylindrical or spherical chamber is provided. In the internally loaded embodiments, a fluid is introduced into the chamber and the pressure exerted by the fluid causes generally tensile stress in the region of the diaphragm generally about the chamber. In the externally loaded embodiments, the diaphragm is immersed within the fluid and the pressure exerted by the fluid causes generally compressive stress in the region of the diaphragm generally about the chamber. For each of the embodiments, the stresses arising cause certain mechanical and electrical properties of the crystalline material to change. The change in these properties is detected by observing the frequency behavior of one or more oscillators whose frequencies of operation are controlled by respective surface acoustic wave devices provided in the regions of elastic deformation. Many diaphragm arrangements are capable of providing temperature compensated pressure measurements. Two particularly useful orientations for the temperature compensated embodiments are the SST and ST orientations.

Claims

1. A surface acoustic wave signal frequency apparatus comprising a crystalline diaphragm section having:

a cylindrical or spherical outer surface and a cylindrical or spherical inner surface, wherein;

one of said outer and inner surfaces is adapted for subjection to an applied pressure; and

the other of said outer and inner surfaces includes a first area thereof having a selected orientation and being adapted for the fabrication of a surface acoustic wave device, and a second area thereof having an orientation substantially identical to the orientation of said first area and being adapted for the fabrication of a surface acoustic wave device;

a first portion of said diaphragm section between said surface adapted for subjection to an applied pressure and said first area having a first predetermined thickness; and

a second portion of said diaphragm section between said surface adapted for subjection to an applied pressure and said second area having a second predetermined thickness different than said first predetermined thickness.

2. A signal frequency apparatus as in claim 1 wherein said diaphragm section has a continuous crystal lattice structure.

3. A signal frequency apparatus as in claim 2 wherein the reference geometric elements of said inner and outer surfaces are coincident.

4. A signal frequency apparatus as in claim 2 wherein the reference geometric elements of said inner and outer surfaces are offset from one another.

5. A signal frequency apparatus as in claim 2 wherein the orientation of said first and second areas is selected from the group consisting of ST orientations and SST orientations.

6. A signal frequency apparatus as in claim 1 wherein said other surface further includes a third area thereof having a selected orientation different than the orientation of said first and second areas and adapted for the fabrication of a surface acoustic wave device, and a fourth area thereof having an orientation substantially identical to the orientation of said third area and adapted for the fabrication of a surface acoustic wave device, said diaphragm section further having:

a third portion of said diaphragm section between said surface adapted for subjection to an applied pressure and said third area having a third predetermined thickness; and

a fourth portion of said diaphragm section between said surface adapted for subjection to an applied pressure and said fourth area having a fourth predetermined thickness different than said third predetermined thickness.

7. A signal frequency apparatus as in claim 6 wherein said diaphragm section has a continuous crystal lattice structure.

8. A signal frequency apparatus as in claim 7 wherein the reference geometric elements of said inner and outer surfaces are coincident.

9. A signal frequency apparatus as in claim 7 wherein:

the reference geometric elements of said inner and outer surfaces are coincident; and

said first and third thicknesses are equal and said second and fourth thicknesses are equal.

10. A signal frequency apparatus as in claim 7 wherein the reference geometric elements of said inner and outer surfaces are offset from one another.

11. A signal frequency apparatus as in claim 7 wherein:

the reference geometric elements of said inner and outer surfaces are offset from one another; and

said first and second thicknesses are unequal and said third and fourth thicknesses are unequal.

12. A signal frequency apparatus as in claim 7 wherein:

the orientation of said first and second areas is a ST orientation; and

the orientation of said third and fourth areas is a SST orientation.

13. A surface acoustic wave signal frequency apparatus comprising a crystalline diaphragm section having:

a cylindrical or spherical outer surface and a cylindrical or spherical inner surface, wherein;

one of said outer and inner surfaces is adapted for subjection to an applied pressure; and

the other of said outer and inner surfaces includes a first area thereof having a selected crystal lattice arrangement and being adapted for the fabrication of a surface acoustic wave device, and a second area thereof having a crystal lattice arrangement substantially identical to the crystal lattice arrangement of said first area and being adapted for the fabrication of a surface acoustic wave device;

a first portion of said diaphragm section between said surface adapted for subjection to an applied pressure and said first area having a first predetermined thickness; and

a second portion of said diaphragm section between said surface adapted for subjection to an applied pressure and said second area having a second predetermined thickness different than said first predetermined thickness.

14. A signal frequency apparatus as in claim 13 wherein said diaphragm section has a continuous crystal lattice structure.

15. A signal frequency apparatus as in claim 14 wherein the reference geometric elements of said inner and outer surfaces are coincident.

16. A signal frequency apparatus as in claim 14 wherein the reference geometric elements of said inner and outer surfaces are offset from one another.

17. A signal frequency apparatus as in claim 14 wherein the crystal lattice arrangement of said first and second areas is selected from the group consisting of ST orientations and SST orientations.

18. A signal frequency apparatus as in claim 13 wherein said other surface further includes a third area thereof having a selected crystal lattice arrangement different than the crystal lattice arrangement of said first and second areas and adapted for the fabrication of a surface acoustic wave device, and a fourth area thereof having a crystal lattice arrangement substantially identical to the crystal lattice arrangement of said third area and adapted for the fabrication of a surface acoustic wave device, said diaphragm section further having:

a third portion of said diaphragm section between said surface adapted for subjection to an applied pressure and said third area having a third predetermined thickness; and

a fourth portion of said diaphragm section between said surface adapted for subjection to an applied pressure and said fourth area having a fourth predetermined thickness different than said third predetermined thickness.

19. A signal frequency apparatus as in claim 18 wherein said diaphragm section has a continuous crystal lattice structure.

20. A signal frequency apparatus as in claim 19 wherein the reference geometric elements of said inner and outer surfaces are coincident.

21. A signal frequency apparatus as in claim 19 wherein:

the reference geometric elements of said inner and outer surfaces are coincident; and

said first and third thicknesses are equal and said second and fourth thicknesses are equal.

22. A signal frequency apparatus as in claim 19 wherein the reference geometric elements of said inner and outer surfaces are offset from one another.

23. A signal frequency apparatus as in claim 19 wherein:

the reference geometric elements of said inner and outer surfaces are offset from one another; and

said first and second thicknesses are unequal and said third and fourth thicknesses are unequal.

24. A signal frequency apparatus as in claim 19 wherein:

the crystal lattice arrangement of said first and second areas is a ST orientation; and

the crystal lattice arrangement of said third and fourth areas is a SST orientation.

25. A surface acoustic wave signal frequency apparatus comprising a crystalline diaphragm section having:

a cylindrical or spherical outer surface and a cylindrical or spherical inner surface, wherein;

one of said outer and inner surfaces is adapted for subjection to an applied pressure; and

the other of said outer and inner surfaces includes a first area thereof having a selected contour and a selected displacement from a reference axis normal to the longitudinal axis thereof and being adapted for the fabrication of a surface acoustic wave device, and a second area thereof having the contour of said first area and a displacement one hundred eighty degrees from said first displacement and being adapted for the fabrication of a surface acoustic wave device;

a first portion of said diaphragm section between said surface adapted for subjection to an applied pressure and said first area having a first predetermined thickness; and

a second portion of said diaphragm section between said surface adapted for subjection to an applied pressure and said second area having a second predetermined thickness different than said first predetermined thickness.

26. A signal frequency apparatus as in claim 25 wherein said diaphragm section has a continuous crystal lattice structure.

27. A signal frequency apparatus as in claim 26 wherein the reference geometric elements of said inner and outer surfaces are coincident.

28. A signal frequency apparatus as in claim 26 wherein the reference geometric elements of said inner and outer surfaces are offset from one another.

29. A signal frequency apparatus as in claim 26 wherein:

the contour of said first and second areas is flat; and

said first displacement is selected from the group consisting of displacements in the vicinity of 40° and

-49.2°

.

30. A signal frequency apparatus as in claim 25 wherein said other surface further includes a third area thereof having a selected contour and a selected displacement from said reference axis different than the displacement of said first area and adapted for the fabrication of a surface acoustic wave device, and a fourth area thereof having the contour of said third area and a displacement one hundred eighty degrees from the displacement of said third area and being adapted for the fabrication of a surface acoustic wave device, said diaphragm section further having:

a third portion of said diaphragm section between said surface adapted for subjection to an applied pressure and said third area having a third predetermined thickness; and

a fourth portion of said diaphragm section between said surface adapted for subjection to an applied pressure and said fourth area having a fourth predetermined thickness different than said third predetermined thickness.

31. A signal frequency apparatus as in claim 30 wherein said diaphragm section has a continuous crystal lattice structure.

32. A signal frequency apparatus as in claim 31 wherein the reference geometric elements of said inner and outer surfaces are coincident.

33. A signal frequency apparatus as in claim 31 wherein:

the reference geometric element of said inner and outer surfaces are coincident; and

said first and third thicknesses are equal and said second and fourth thicknesses are equal.

34. A signal frequency apparatus as in claim 31 wherein the reference geometric elements of said inner and outer surfaces are offset from one another.

35. A signal frequency apparatus as in claim 31 wherein:

the reference geometric elements of said inner and outer surfaces are offset from one another; and

said first and second thicknesses are unequal and said third and fourth thicknesses are unequal.

36. A signal frequency apparatus as in claim 31 wherein:

the contour of said first, second, third and fourth areas is flat;

said first displacement is approximately 40°

; and

said third displacement is approximately -49.2°

.

37. A surface acoustic wave signal frequency apparatus comprising a crystalline diaphragm section having:

a cylindrical or spherical outer surface and a cylindrical or spherical inner surface, one of said outer and inner surfaces being adapted for subjection to an applied pressure, and the other of said outer and inner surfaces having a first area and a second area adapted for the fabrication of a surface acoustic wave device;

first signal frequency means comprising said first area and a surface acoustic wave device fabricated thereon, said first signal frequency means having selected temperature-frequency and pressure-frequency characteristics; and

second signal frequency means comprising said second area and a surface acoustic wave device fabricated thereon, said second signal frequency means having temperature-frequency characteristics substantially identical to the temperature-frequency characteristics of said first signal frequency means, and selected pressure-frequency characteristics different from the pressure-frequency characteristics of said first signal frequency means.

38. A surface acoustic wave pressure sensor comprising a diaphragm of a continuous crystal lattice structure, having:

a cylindrical inner surface adapted for subjection to an applied fluid;

a cylindrical outer surface having an axis parallel to an axis of said inner surface, said outer surface including longitudinally centered thereon a first area and a second area, said first and second areas having substantially the same orientation and being adapted for the fabrication of respectively at least one surface acoustic wave device;

a first diaphragm portion between said inner surface and said first area having a first predetermined thickness; and

a second diaphragm portion between said inner surface and said second area having a second predetermined thickness different from said first predetermined thickness.

39. A pressure sensor as in claim 38 further comprising:

surface acoustic wave devices fabricated on respectively said first and second areas;

oscillator circuits coupled to respectively said surface acoustic wave devices;

a mixer connected to outputs of said oscillator circuits;

a frequency counter connected to an output of said mixer; and

a processor connected to an output of said frequency counter for determining a temperature conpensated pressure measurement.

40. A pressure sensing diaphragm as in claim 38 wherein the axes of said inner and outer surfaces are conincident.

43. A pressure sensing diaphragm as in claim 39 wherein the axes of said inner and outer surfaces are coincident.

41. A surface acoustic wave pressure sensor comprising a diaphragm of a continuous crystal lattice structure, having:

a cylindrical or spherical outer surface adapted for subjection to an applied fluid;

a cylindrical or spherical inner surface having an axis parallel to an axis of said outer surface, said inner surface including longitudinally centered thereon a first area and a second area, said first and second areas having substantially the same orientation and being adapted for the fabrication of respectively at least one surface acoustic wave device;

a first diaphragm portion between said outer surface and said first area having a first predetermined thickness; and

a second diaphragm portion between said outer surface and said second area having a second predetermined thickness different from said first predetermined thickness.

42. A pressure sensor as in claim 41 further comprising:

surface acoustic wave devices fabricated on respectively said first and second areas;

oscillator circuits coupled to respectively said surface acoustic wave devices;

a mixer connected to outputs of said oscillator circuits;

a frequency counter connected to an output of said mixer; and

a processor connected to an output of said frequency counter for determining a temperature compensated pressure measurement.
