A ceramic material for joining, coating or sealing a honeycomb structure comprising, per 100 parts by weight, a first mixture of 20 to 80 parts by weight of cordierite powder and 20 to 80 parts by weight of a ceramic powder having a crystalline phase consisting essentially of a solid solution of SiO2 - Al2 O3 - Fe2 O3 - TiO2 - MgO, said first mixture having a chemical composition consisting essentially of 15.7 to 44.0% by weight of SiO2, 29.8 to 41.0% by weight of Al2 O3, 0.9 to 8.3% by weight of Fe2 O3, 7.0 to 35.9% by weight of TiO2 and 4.9 to 16.1% by weight of MgO said first mixture being fired at a temperature between 1300°
