Abstract

An arrangement for generating a classification code for a fingerprint having a pattern of ridges, the ridges having a plurality of reference features, which includes overlaying the intersection of a pair of cross-hairs at a first one of the reference features. A line is overlaid from a second one of the reference features to the first reference feature. The cross-hairs are oriented so that the line bisects a quadrant of the cross-hairs. The ridges crossed by predetermined portions of the cross-hairs are counted to generate the classification code.

Claims

1. A method of generating a classification code for a fingerprint having a pattern of ridges, the ridges including a plurality of reference features, comprising

overlaying the intersection of a pair of cross-hairs at a first reference feature,

overlaying a line between a second reference feature and the first reference feature,

rotating the cross-hairs so that the line bisects a quadrant of the cross-hairs,

counting the number of ridges crossed by predetermined portions of the cross-hairs, and

generating the classification code responsive to said ridge counting step.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the fingerprint is a loop pattern, and said reference features comprise a core and a delta,

said cross-hair overlaying step comprises overlaying the intersection of the cross-hairs at the core,

said line overlaying step comprises overlaying the line between the delta and the core, and

said ridge counting step comprises counting the number of ridges crossed by the line between the core and the delta, and for each predetermined portion of the cross-hairs, counting the number of ridges crossed by the predetermined portion.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the fingerprint is a whorl pattern, and said reference features comprise a core, and first and second deltas,

said cross-hair overlaying step comprises overlaying the intersection of the cross-hairs at the core,

said line overlaying step comprises overlaying a first line between the core and the first delta, and overlaying a second line between the core and the second delta, and

said cross-hair rotating step and said ridge counting step comprise

rotating the cross-hairs so that the first line bisects a quadrant of the cross-hairs, counting the number of ridges crossed by the first line, and for each predetermined portion of the cross-hairs, counting the number of ridges crossed by the predetermined portion, and

rotating the cross-hairs so that the second line bisects a quadrant of the cross-hairs, counting the number of ridges crossed by the second line, and for each predetermined portion of the cross-hairs, counting the number of ridges crossed by the predetermined portion.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein the first delta is the left delta and the second delta is the right delta, and said classification code generating step further comprises

selecting the first portion of the cross-hairs which lies in a counter-clockwise direction from the first line between the core and the left delta,

overlaying a third line fromt he core colinear with said selected portion of the cross-hairs,

overlaying a fourth line perpendicular to the third line, said fourth line extending from the left delta to the third line,

overlaying a fifth line perpendicular to the third line, said line extending from the right delta to the third line,

generating a difference signal corresponding to the difference between the distance from the intersection of the third and fourth lines to the core and the distance from the intersection of the third and fifth lines to the core, and

generating a descriptor responsive to the difference signal, said descriptor being indicative of the relative position of the left delta with respect to the right delta.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the fingerprint is a twin loop whorl pattern, and said reference features comprise first and second cores, and first and second deltas;

said cross-hair overlaying step comprises overlaying the intersection of a first pair of cross-hairs at the first core, and overlaying the intersection of a second pair of cross-hairs at the second core;

said line overlaying step comprises overlaying a first line between the first core and the first delta, and overlaying a second line between the second core and the second delta;

said cross-hair rotating step comprises rotating the first pair of cross-hairs so that the first line bisects a quadrant of the first pair of cross-hairs, and rotating the second pair of cross-hairs so that the second line bisects a quadrant of the second pair of cross-hairs; and

said ridge counting step comprises counting the number of ridges crossed by the first line, counting the number of ridges crossed by the second line, and for each predetermined portion of the first and second cross-hairs, counting the number of ridges crossed by the predetermined portion.

The method of claim 1 wherein the fingerprint is a tented arch pattern having a central spike, said first reference feature is the top end of the central spike, and said second reference feature is substantially the center of the central spike, whereby said line overlaid between the first and second reference features is substantially colinear with the central spike.

The method of claim 1 wherein the fingerprint is a tented arch pattern having a recurving ridge, said first reference feature is the top end of the recurving ridge, and said second reference feature is substantially the center of the area enclosed by the recurving ridge, whereby said line overlaid between the first and second reference features bisects the area enclosed by the recurving ridge.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the angle formed by the intersection of the cross-hairs is substantially 90 degrees.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein there are four predetermined portions of the cross-hairs, each portion extending for a predetermined length away from the intersection in a different direction.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the length of each of the predetermined portions of the cross-hairs is about 20 millimeters.

11. Apparatus for generating a classification code for a fingerprint having a pattern of ridges, the ridges including a plurality of reference features, comprising

means for overlaying the intersection of a pair of cross-hairs at a first reference feature,

means for overlaying a line between a second reference feature and the first reference feature,

means for rotating the cross-hairs so that the line bisects a quadrant of the cross-hairs,

means for counting the number of ridges crossed by predetermined portions of the cross-hairs, and

means for generating the classification code responsive to said ridge counting step.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the fingerprint is a loop pattern, and said reference features comprise a core and a delta,

said cross-hair overlaying means comprises means for overlaying the intersection of the cross-hairs at the core,

said line overlaying means comprises means for overlaying the line between the delta and the core, and

said ridge counting means comprises means for counting the number of ridges crossed by the line between the core and the delta, and for each predetermined portion of the cross-hairs, means for counting the number of ridges crossed by the predetermined portion.

13. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the fingerprint is a whorl pattern and said reference features comprise a core, and first and second deltas,

said cross-hair overlaying means comprises means for overlaying the intersection of the cross-hairs at the core,

said line overlaying means comprises means for overlaying a first line between the core and the first delta, and means for overlaying a second line between the core and the second delta, and

said cross-hair rotating means and said ridge counting means comprise

means for rotating the cross-hairs so that the first line bisects a quadrant of the cross-hairs, means for counting the number of ridges crossed by the first line, and for each predetermined portion of the cross-hairs, means for counting the number of ridges crossed by the predetermined portion, and

means for rotating the cross-hairs so that the second line bisects a quadrant of the cross-hairs, means for counting the number of ridges crossed by the second line, and for each predetermined portion of the cross-hairs, means for counting the number of ridges crossed by the predetermined portion.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 wherein the first delta is the left delta and the second delta is the right delta, and said classification code generating means further comprises

means for selecting the first portion of the cross-hairs which lies in a counter-clockwise direction from the first line between the core and the left delta,

means for overlaying a third line from the core colinear with said selected portion of the cross-hairs,

means for overlaying a fourth line perpendicular to the third line, said fourth line extending from the left delta to the third line,

means for overlaying a fifth line perpendicular to the third line, said fifth line extending from the right delta to the third line,

means for generating a difference signal corresponding to the difference between the distance from the intersection of the third and fourth lines to the core and the distance from the intersection of the third and fifth lines to the core, and

means for generating a descriptor responsive to the difference signal, said descriptor being indicative to the relative position of the left delta with respect to the right delta.

15. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the fingerprint is a twin loop whorl pattern, and said reference features comprise first and second cores, and first and second deltas;

said cross-hair overlaying means comprises means for overlaying the intersection of a first pair of cross-hairs at the first core, and means for overlaying the intersection of a second pair of cross-hairs at the second core;

said line overlaying means comprises means for overlaying a first line between the first core and the first delta, and means for overlaying a second line between the second core and the second delta;

said cross-hair rotating means comprises means for rotating the first pair of cross-hairs so that the first line bisects a quadrant of the first pair of cross-hairs, and means for rotating the second pair of cross-hairs so that the second line bisects a quadrant of the second pair of cross-hairs; and

said ridge counting means comprises means for counting the number of ridges crossed by the first line, means for counting the number of ridges crossed by the second line, and for each predetermined portion of the first and second cross-hairs, means for counting the number of ridges crossed by the predetermined portion.

The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the fingerprint is a tented arch pattern having a central spike, said first reference feature is the top end of the central spike, and said second reference feature is substantially the center of the central spike, whereby said line overlaid between the first and second reference features is substantially colinear with the central spike.

The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the fingerprint is a tented arch pattern having a recurving ridge, said first reference feature is the top end of the recurving ridge, and said second reference feature is substantially the center of the area enclosed by the recurving ridge, whereby said line overlaid between the first and second reference features bisects the area enclosed by the recurving ridge.

18. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the angle formed by the intersection of the cross-hairs is substantially 90 degrees.

19. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein there are four predetermined portions of the cross-hairs, each portion extending for a predetermined length away from the intersection in a different direction.

20. The apparatus of claim 19 wherein the length of the predetermined portion of the cross-hairs is about 20 millimeters.
