A method for making an ultra-violet-absorbing copolymer which comprises free radically polymerizing at least 0.05 part by weight of a compound of the formula ##STR5## wherein R is alkyl having from 4 to 12 carbon atoms not more than 6 of which are present in an unbranched chain, with up to 99.95 parts by weight of at least one other vinyl or vinylidene monomer.
