Abstract

Signals provided by probes (1, 2, 3) disposed in the gas stream of a gas turbine engine are classified in accordance with discriminators (Tables 2-9) utilized in various routines (FIGS. 25-56), including some discriminators which are not currently used, but may allow further discrimination of additional signals, when recognized. The categories of waveshapes (FIGS. 57-80) which are classified includes categories (FIGS. 70 and 71) which are readily distinguishable but have not as yet been correlated to engine events, thereby providing a data history base in the event they become correlated and aiding in the discrimination of these signals from other, correlated signals.

Claims

1. Electrostatic diagnostic apparatus for distincly correlating different events occurring in an operating gas turbine engine, comprising:

electrostatic signal means, including a probe to be disposed in the gas stream of an engine, for providing, when said probe is disposed in the gas stream of an operating engine, a probe signal having a waveshape defined by amplitude variations thereof across a time interval of a given duration in response to electrostatic charge flowing in the gas stream in the vicinity of said probe; and

signal processing means connected for response to said electrostatic signal means, for selectively providing a particular engine event identifying signal selected, in response to said amplitude variations across said time interval, from among a plurality of identifying signals in dependence on the waveshape of said probe signal having characteristics correlated to an engine event corresponding to said selected identfying signal, and for selectively providing a particular unidentified category signal in dependence on the waveshape of said probe signal having characteristics correlated to an unidentified engine event.

Electrostatic diagnostic apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said signal processing means provides said particular engine event identifying signal in dependence on waveshape characteristics including presence or absence of a primary pulse-like portion, polarity of any said primary pulse-like portion when present, presence or absence of a secondary pulse-like portion subsequent to any said primary pulse-like portion when present, the coarse frequency content of a portion of said waveshape, and the magnitude of noise energy of a portion of said waveshape, said characteristics being identified by corresponding parameter signals which vary from one of said identifying signals to another, whereby changing of any of said parameter signals changes the characterization of the waveshape in dependence on which one of said identifying signals is provided.
