Abstract

The waveforms (FIGS. 57-80) of signals derived from electrostatic probes (1, 2, 3) are classified (FIG. 9) in terms of width (FIG. 14), presence or absence of following peaks (FIG. 15), presence of multiple peaks (FIG. 21), frequency content (FIG. 22), and noise content of a portion thereof (FIG. 23) as well as polarity utilizing routines related to the various probes (FIGS. 10-12).

Claims

1. Electrostatic diagnostic apparatus for distinctly correlating different events occurring in an operating gas turbine engine, comprising:

electrostatic signal means, including a probe to be disposed in the gas stream of an engine, for providing, when said probe is disposed in the gas stream of an operating engine, a probe signal having a waveshape defined by amplitude variations thereof across a time interval of a given duration in response to electrostatic charge flowing in the gas stream in the vicinity of said probe; and

signal processing means connected for response to said electrostatic signal means, for selectively providing a particular engine event identifying signal selected, in response to said amplitude variations across said time interval, from among a plurality of identifying signals in dependence on the waveshape of said probe signal having characteristics correlated to an engine event corresponding to said particular identifying signal.

Electrostatic diagnostic apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said signal processing means provides said particular engine event identifying signal in dependence on waveshape characteristics including presence or absence of a primary pulse-like portion, polarity of any said primary pulse-like portion when present, presence of absence of a secondary pulse-like portion subsequent to any said primary pulse-like portion when present, the course frequency content of a portion of said waveshape, and the magnitude of noise energy of a portion of said waveshape.

Electrostatic diagnostic apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said signal processing means comprises means for providing an alternative signal indictive of the causal engine event being unknown in dependence on the waveshape of said probe signal not having characteristics correlated to an engine event corresponding to any of said identifying signals.

Electrostatic diagnostic apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said electrostatic signal means includes a filter having an upper cut-off frequency of between several hundred Hz and 1,000 Hz to thereby provide said electrical probe signal having a waveshape including amplitude variations with frequency components limited to said upper cut-off frequency.
