1. A polymer, wherein the polymer chain comprises monomers of the formula:

  • ##STR25## wherein R1 is hydrogen or methyl, X is --O-- or --N--R4 ;

    R is a linear or branched C2 -C12 -alkylene group which is uninterrupted or interrupted by one or more of the groups --O--, --S-- or --N--R4 ;

    R2 is a radical of the formula;

    ##STR26## where Y is ##STR27## and Z is a chemical bond or ##STR28## R5 is hydrogen, C1 -C12 -alkyl, C5 -C7 -cycloalkyl, C1 -C12 -alkoxy, C1 -C12 -alkoxycarbonyl, C2 -C12 -alkanoyloxy, fluorine, chlorine, bromine, cyano or nitro, and R6 is hydrogen, C1 -C12 -alkyl, C1 -C12 -alkoxy or C1 -C12 -alkoxycarbonyl;

    R3 is the radical of a pleochroic dye comprising anthraquinone, stilbene, monoazo, bisazo and trisazo dyes, which is bonded to R via ##STR29## or an imide group; and

    R4 is hydrogen or unsubstituted or substituted C1 -C4 -alkyl, and which contains from 0.1 to 40% by weight, based on the polymer, of the R3 dye radicals.
