Chucking device for interchangeable holding of probe pins in a coordinate-measuring instrument
First Claim
1. A clamping device for the interchangeable attachment of a work-contacting probe pin or probe-pin combination to the probe head of a coordinate-measuring instrument, wherein the probe pin or probe-pin combination has a connecting member of magnetic flux-conducting material, said clamping device comprising a reference support having means engageable with an applied connecting member in such manner as to unequivocally determine its position in the clamping device on the probe head, a permanent magnet and an electromagnet whose field is superposed on the field of the permanent magnet, the electromagnet being an electrical coil surrounding the permanent magnet and utilizing the permanent magnet as the central core of the electromagnet, the permanent magnet being movable toward and away from the reference support and being so positioned with respect to a connecting member applied to said support as to attract and retain the connecting member in its unequivocally determined position;
- the electromagnet, when excited in polarized opposition to the permanent magnet, effectively neutralizing the attraction of the permanent magnet to the applied connecting member; and
spring means reacting between the support and the permanent magnet and urging the magnet in the direction away from the support and with a force which is less than the force of permanent-magnet attraction to an applied connecting member.

Abstract
The invention concerns a receiver (1) in the probe head of a multiple-coordinate measuring machine in which probe-pin combinations (21) can be replaceably chucked with high precision with respect to their position in space. The receiver contains an isostatic three-point support (14) against which the base (15, 16, 17, 18, 19) of the probe-pin combination is drawn by an electrically operated clamping device. The clamping device is coupled with the control computer of the measuring machine so that a probe change can be effected automatically.
In a preferred embodiment, the clamping device consists of a permanent magnet (11) and of an electromagnet (10) by which the field of the permanent magnet (11) can be selectively counteracted or increased to achieve pick-up and release functions. In another embodiment, a motor-driven screw thread performs the pick-up and release functions, and assures that the picked-up probe will unambiguously be drawn into correct isostatic engagement with the three-point support.

9. A clamping device for the interchangeable attachment of a work-contacting probe pin or probe-pin combination to the probe head of a coordinate-measuring instrument, wherein the probe pin or probe-pin combination has a connecting member of magnetic flux-conducting material, said clamping device comprising a reference support adapted to unequivocally determine the position of the probe pin or probe-pin combination with respect to the clamping device on the probe head when the connecting member is engaged to the reference support, said clamping device further including a permanent magnet and an electromagnet movably mounted with respect to said support such that (a) in one position said permanent magnet alone coacts with the connecting member to attract and retain the same in the unequivocally determined position and (b) upon excitation of said electromagnet said permanent magnet is displaced away from said support, and means to displace said permanent magnet away from said support, the permanent-magnet attraction to said connecting member being effectively neutralized by the action of said electromagnet, whereby electromagnet excitation is determinative of release and pick-up of a probe pin or probe-pin combination and is not involved in probe-pin retention by the clamping device.
