Abstract

An implant and method for treating external human eye conditions due to a deficiency of tears. The method includes the temporary blockade of the canaliculus of a patient without resorting to a surgical stitch, observing the response of the patient'"'"'s eye to the temporary blockade and, if an improvement is observed, placing an implant within the horizontal portion of at least one of the canaliculi of the patient'"'"'s eye. The temporary blockade may be produced by the placement of a piece of catgut in the canaliculus. The implant is constructed of a material that is nonabsorbable by the human body and is constructed to facilitate placement into and removal from the canaliculus.

Claims

1. A method of treating external human eye conditions due to a deficiency of tears, including the steps of temporarily blockading the canaliculus of a patient with an absorbable implant placed totally within the canaliculus, observing the blockage after a preselected period to note any improvements in the eye condition, and if an improvement in the eye condition is noted, placing a nonabsorbable implant totally within the horizontal portion of at least one of the canaliculi of the patient.

2. A method of treating external human eye conditions due to a deficiency of tears including the steps of temporarily blockading by inserting an absorbable implant totally within the canaliculus of a patient without resorting to local anesthesia to retain tears in the eye;

observing the response of the patient'"'"'s eye to the temporary blockage after a preselected period to note any improvement in the eye condition, if an imporovement in the eye condition is noted, placing a nonabsorbable implant in the punctum of the patient'"'"'s eye, and then advancing the implant in the punctum to position it completely within the horizontal portion of the canaliculus of the eye.

3. A method for treating external human eye conditions due to a deficiency of tears as defined in claim 2 wherein the step of temporarily blockading the canaliculus comprises placing an absorbable, removable element in the canaliculus that is absorbable by the human body.

4. A method for treating external human eye conditions due to a deficiency of tears as defined in claim 3 wherein the absorbable element comprises a preselected piece of catgut.

5. A method of treating external human eye conditions due to a deficiency of tears as defined in claim 4 wherein the piece of catgut is 3-0 gauge catgut of approximately 5 millimeters long.

6. A method of treating external human eye conditions due to a deficiency of tears as defined in claim 2 wherein said nonabsorbable implant comprises a cylindrical element of a preselected length having a tapered portion adjacent one end to facilitate insertion in the canaliculus while holding the opposite end thereof.

7. A method of treating external human eye conditions due to a deficiency of tears as defined in claim 2 wherein said implant is constructed and defined of a non-absorbable cylindrical material having an end of reduced diameter to facilitate implantation into and removal from the canaliculus.

8. A method of treating external human eye conditions due to a deficiency of tears as defined in claim 7 wherein said nonabsorbable implant has a length of approximately 5 to 8 millimeters and a diameter of approximately 0.3 to 1.2 millimeters.

9. A method of treating external human eye conditions due to a deficiency of tears as defined in claim 7 wherein said nonabsorbable implant includes at least a single passageway extending therethrough for permitting a preselected amount of tears to pass therethrough.

10. A method of treating external human eye conditions due to a deficiency of tears as defined in claim 7 wherein the opposite end of the nonabsorbable implant is constructed and defined to further facilitate the insertion of the implant.

11. A method of treating external human eye conditions due to a deficiency of tears as defined in claim 2 wherein said nonabsorbable implant is constructed and defined as a carrier for distributing medications throughout the human body.

12. A method of treating external human eye conditions due to a deficiency of tears as defined in claim 2 wherein said nonabsorbable implant is loaded with a preselected medication for release to the eye.

13. A method of treating external human eye conditions due to a deficiency of tears as defined in claim 4 wherein said implant is constructed and defined of a nonabsorbable cylindrical material having an end or reduced diameter to facilitate implantation into and removal from the canaliculus.

A method for treating external human eye conditions due to a deficiency of tears, including the steps of conducting a Schirmer tear strip test on the eye of a patient to determine if there is a deficiency of tears in the patient'"'"'s eye, if the tear strip test reveals a preselected deficiency of tears in the eye of the patient, placing a nonabsorbable, implant in the horizontal portion of at least one of the canaliculi of the patient'"'"'s eye so as to be completely contained within the horizontal portion of the canaliculus.

15. A method for treating external human eye conditions due to a deficiency of tears as defined in claim 14, wherein said implant is constructed and defined to be removable from the canaliculi.

16. A method for treating external human eye conditions due to a deficiency of tears as defined in claim 14 wherein said implant is nonabsorbable by the human body and the implant is a cylindrical element having an end of reduced diameter to permit the ready insertion of the element in the canaliculi of the patient'"'"'s eye.

17. A method for treating external human eye conditions due to a deficiency of tears including the steps of testing the patient'"'"'s eye to determine if a tear deficiency exists, and if a tear deficiency is determined, place a removable nonabsorbable implant totally within the horizontal portion of at least one of the canaliculi of the patient'"'"'s eye.
