1. A method for forming ferric hydrous oxide of a character that retards the deposition of iron based compounds on the walls of a conduit, comprising:

  • flowing to a vented chamber an aqueous solution containing iron based compounds which include magnetite, the aqueous solution having an oxygen content which supresses the formation of magnetite and promotes the conversion of a portion of the magnetite to ferric hydrous oxide during boiling of the aqueous solution at atmospheric pressure;

    heating the aqueous solution at atmospheric pressure until the aqueous solution boils for a period of time that causes the conversion of at least a portion of said magnetite to ferric hydrous oxide;

    cooling a portion of said boiled aqueous solution and disposing said cooled, boiled aqueous solution including said ferric hydrous oxide of a character that retards the deposition of iron based compounds in said conduit.
