A process for producing a spectrally sensitized silver halide photographic emulsion comprising adding a substantially water-insoluble organic spectral sensitizing dye in an aqueous medium to an emulsion before completion of the formation of silver halide grains without using an organic solvent, wherein said substantially water-insoluble organic spectral sensitizing dye has a water solubility of 0.01% by weight or less.
