Abstract

A system for determining the current carrying capability of one or more overhead power transmission lines monitors one or more spans of each line on real-time basis and identifies the span having the lowest current carrying capacity which in turn establishes the maximum capacity of the entire line. The thermal state of each monitored line span is determined by measuring the conductor temperature, line current, solar radiation, ambient temperature, and in some cases wind speed and wind direction. These parameters are monitored by a sensor-transmitter unit that may be removably clamped on the line conductor which may range in size from one to several inches in diameter, and includes a radio transmitter for transmitting sensed data to a receiving substation. The data from the sensor-transmitter is multiplexed and transmitted by a telecommunications link to a computer which automatically determines line capacity using the real-time data and also calculates the time required for the "critical span" having the lowest current capacity to reach its maximum safe temperature based on any of a number of step changes in load demands. Each sensor-transmitter may include sensors for monitoring the current level, conductor temperature, solar radiation impinging on the conductor, ambient temperature, wind direction and velocity and conductor sag. These sensors and the transmitter are enclosed in a corona-free housing and are powered by a power supply that includes a transformer core which surrounds and is inductively coupled with the monitored conductor.

Claims

1. A sensing device adapted to be clamped to an electrically energized overhead electric power line, comprising:

a housing;

sensing means in said housing;

first and second jaws carried by said housing, said jaws being shiftable relative to each other from a closed position clamping said line therebetween and an open position releasing said line from jaws;

power supply means carried by said housing for supplying electrical power to said sensing means, said power supply means including an electrical transformer for supplying electrical current to said sensing means, said transformer including a magnetic core for inductively coupling said line with said transformer when said jaws are in said closed position thereof;

said magnetic core including first and second core portions shiftable relative to each other,

at least said first jaw being shiftable relative to said housing and mounted thereon; and

said first core portion connected to said first jaw.

2. The sensing device of claim 1, wherein each of said first and second core portions is generally J-shaped, and the extremities of said first and second core portions overlap each other when said jaws are in said closed position thereof.

3. The sensing device of claim 1, wherein said core includes a plurality of stacked laminations.

4. The sensing device of claim 1, wherein said core includes a plurality of turns of an electrical conductor formed by winding a conductor around a mandrel.

5. The sensing device of claim 1, including first means for mounting said first jaw and said first core portion for reciprocable movement relative to said second jaw and second means for mounting said first core portion on said first mounting means for reciprocable movement relative to said first jaw.

6. The sensing device of claim 5, wherein said second mounting means includes means for biasing said first core portion to shift in one direction relative to said first jaw.

7. The sensing device of claim 6, wherein said core includes a plurality of laminations formed by winding magnetic core material about a mandrel.

8. The sensing device of claim 6, wherein:

said mounting means includes a mounting member and means connected with said mounting member for guiding the shifting movement of said first core portion, and

said biasing means includes at least one spring connected between said first core portion and said mounting member.

9. The sensing device of claim 1, wherein said power supply means includes a coil inductively coupled with said core, said core and said coil being spaced from said conductor, whereby the heat generated by said power supply means does not substantially affect the temperature of said line.

10. The sensing device of claim 9, wherein said housing includes a portion defining a heat sink for conducting heat generated by said core into the ambient environment, and said second core portion is disposed within said housing portion.

11. The sensing device of claim 1, wherein said core and a portion of said housing circumscribes said line and said housing is defined by first and second halves, said device further including means for substantially electrically isolating said first and second halves from each other at said housing portion to prevent said housing portion from creating a shorted coil-turn around said line.

12. The sensing device of claim 11, wherein said isolating means includes a slot between said housing halves.

13. The sensing device of claim 1, including means for shiftably mounting said first jaw on said housing, said mounting means having a coefficient of thermal expansion different from that of said housing, said device further including means for compensating for the effects of the difference in the coefficients of thermal expansion of said mounting means and said housing.

14. The sensing device of claim 13, wherein:

said mounting means includes a shaft mounted on said housing, and

said compensating means includes a third jaw spaced from said second jaw and opposing said first jaw, said first, second and third jaws being positioned to bend said line in a manner to impose a biasing pressure on said shaft and said housing.

15. The sensing device of claim 14, wherein said second and third jaws are spaced apart from each other and said first jaw is disposed between said second and third jaws, whereby to create a moment on said line and a spring-like action between said line and said jaws which compensates for the difference in thermal expansion between said housing and said shiftable mounting means.

16. The sensing device of claim 1, wherein said housing includes means for reducing arcing between said housing and said line when said device is installed on said line.

17. The sensing device of claim 16, wherein said arcing reducing means includes an inclined surface against which said line may be slammed during installation of said device on said line and a protective insulative cover on at least a part of said housing for engaging said line when said line is slammed against said housing.

18. The sensing device of claim 1, wherein:

said housing includes a passageway therein into which said line may be received, and an opening in the periphery of said housing communicating with said passageway and allowing said line to be passed into said passageway,

said jaws being respectively disposed on opposite sides of said passageway, and

said first core portion includes a core section shiftable between a first position extending across and blocking said opening to prevent escape of said line from said passageway, and a second position clearing said opening to allow entry into and egress from said passageway by said line.

19. The sensing device of claim 18, wherein said first core portion includes means enclosing said core section for shielding said core section from sources of corona.

20. The sensing device of claim 1, wherein said housing is generally C-shaped to present an opening into which said line may be, inserted and said transformer includes a coil, said magnetic core encircling said line when said jaws are in said closed portion thereof, said core including a shiftable portion shiftable between a closed position defining a closed magnetic flux path in which magnetic flux is coupled from said line to said core and an open position in which said flux path is interrupted.

21. The sensing device of claim 20, wherein:

said sensing means includes at least one temperature sensor, and

said housing includes first and second compartments therein adjacent said line and adjacent each other, said coil being mounted in said first compartment, said temperature sensor being mounted in said second compartment.

22. The sensing device of claim 1, wherein said sensing means includes a sensor mounted in one of said first and second jaws for sensing the temperature of said line.

23. The sensing device of claim 22, wherein said one jaw is formed of thermally insulative material.

24. The sensing device of claim 22, wherein said sensing means includes a sensor for sensing ambient temperature.

25. The sensing device of claim 24, wherein said sensor for sensing ambient temperature is mounted in the other of said first and second jaws.

26. The sensing device of claim 25, wherein said other of said first and second jaws is formed of thermally insulative material.

27. The sensing device of claim 24, wherein said sensor for sensing ambient temperature is mounted in said one jaw.

28. The sensing device of claim 1, including a third jaw for clamping said line, and wherein said sensing means includes first, second and third temperature sensors respectively mounted in said first, second and third jaws for sensing the ambient temperature and the temperature of said line.

29. The sensing device of claim 1, wherein said sensing means includes a temperature sensor for engaging and sensing the temperature of said line.

30. The sensing device of claim 29, wherein said temperature sensor includes a sensor probe for engaging said line and means for limiting the magnitude of heat conducted from said line through said probe.

31. The sensing device of claim 30, wherein said sensor probe includes a constriction in said probe defined by an area of reduced cross sectional dimension.

32. The sensing device of claim 29, wherein said sensing means includes a sensing probe mounted for movement into engagement with said line.

33. The sensing device of claim 32, wherein said sensing means includes means for biasing said sensing probe into engagement with said line.

34. The sensing device of claim 29, wherein said sensing means includes an elongate sensing probe and low mass means on one end of said probe for conformally contacting the surface of said line.

35. The sensing device of claim 1, wherein said first and second jaws include line engaging surfaces contoured to engage a plurality of sizes of lines.

36. The sending device of claim 1, including means for periodically switching said electrical transformer.

37. The sensing device of claim 36, wherein said transformer includes a secondary circuit and said switching means includes a switching circuit for periodically shorting the secondary circuit of said transformer.

38. The sensing device of claim 1, including means for sensing the magnitude of current flowing through said line and means responsive to said current sensing means for controlling said transformer in a manner to prevent saturation of said transformer.

39. A device for sensing a parameter related to the electrical current carrying capacity of an overhead power line, comprising:

a housing;

means on said housing for clamping said housing on said line;

a sensing element for sensing said parameter when said housing is clamped on said line by said clamping means;

said housing including means for reducing arcing between said housing and said line when said device is installed on said line; and

means for shiftably mounting said sensing element on said housing, including means for biasing said sensing element into contact with said line.

40. The sensing device of claim 39, wherein said sensing element includes a thermocouple for sensing the temperature of said line and a reciprocable elongate probe for contacting said line, said biasing means including a spring connected to said probe.

41. The sensing device of claim 40, wherein said probe includes means for limiting the magnitude of heat conducted through said probe.

42. The sensing device of claim 41, wherein said limiting means includes a constriction in said probe.

43. The sensing device of claim 39, wherein:

said clamping means includes at least one jaw for engaging said line,

said sensing element being mounted in said one jaw.

44. The sensing device of claim 39, wherein said sensing element includes means for conformally engaging said line.

45. A sensing device adapted to be clamped to an overhead electrical power line, comprising:

a housing including first and second halves, said halves respectively including opposing compartments therein;

a shiftable jaw for clamping said housing on said line;

electrical means for sensing a parameter related to the capacity of said line to carry electrical current;

first and second electrical circuits respectively disposed in said first and second compartments and connected with said sensing means for controlling the operation of said device;

first means for mounting said jaw for movement between said housing halves;

said housing including means for reducing arcing between said housing and said line when said device is installed on said line; and

second means for mounting said first means and said first and second circuits in said housing, including a pair of opposing spaced apart plates.

46. The sensing device of claim 45, wherein said first means includes at least two tracks and said first circuit and one of said tracks are respectively mounted on opposite sides of one of said plates, and

said second circuit and the other of said tracks being respectively mounted on opposite sides of the other of said plates.

47. The sensing device of claim 46, wherein said plates are formed of a ferrous material for shielding said first and second circuits from magnetic fields produced by electrical current flowing through said line.

48. The sensing device of claim 45, wherein said housing includes a plurality of holes therein communicating with each of said compartments and allowing air to flow through said compartments.

49. The sensing device of claim 45, including means in said housing for allowing water entering said housing between said first and second halves to drain from said housing.
