Abstract

Apparatus for heating or cooling fluids, particularly physiological fluids such as blood or plasma or fluids, such as dialysis fluid, which are used in the treatment of physiological fluids. Also disclosed are containers in which or through which fluids may be contained or circulated in order to effect heating or cooling.

Claims

1. A flexible container means adapted to be received in a frame means having a cross member from which extends a pair of substantially parallel arm elements and in which a liquid may be stored or through which a liquid may be circulated, said container means comprising a pair of walls including two relatively thin, generally flexible sheets of a polymeric material, a top edge, a bottom edge, a centrally located compartment for containing said liquid, an elongated sleeve adjoining each side edge of said compartment, an inlet for introducing said liquid into said compartment and an outlet for withdrawing said liquid from said compartment, each of said sleeves having an inner edge and an outer edge, the straight-line distance between the outer edges of said sleeves being greater along the top edge of the container means than the straight-line distance between the outer edges of said sleeves along the bottom edge of said container means.

2. Container means according to claim 1 in which the inlet means and the outlet means are located along the top edge of the container means.

3. Container means according to claim 1 in which the inlet means is located along said top edge near one of the side edges of said compartment and said outlet means is located along said top edge near the other of the side edges of said compartment.

4. Container means according to claim 3 in which said elongated sleeves are coextensive with the side edges of said compartment.

5. Container means according to claim 1 further including means associated with said compartment for dividing said compartment into a plurality of channels for the flow of liquid therethrough.

6. Container means according to claim 5 in which said plurality of channels have substantially identical widths.

7. Container means according to claim 6 further including means for dividing at least one of said plurality of channels into two narrower channels of substantially identical widths.

8. Container means according to claim 6 further including means for dividing one of said plurality of channels into two narrower channels of substantially identical width.

Container means according to claim 1 in which said two sheets of polymeric material comprising the walls of said container are joined to each other along relatively narrow, substantially equally spaced lines of attachment located interiorly of said compartment whereby a plurality of channels for the flow of liquid is provided in said compartment.

10. Container means according to claim 9 in which said channels have substantially identical widths.

11. Container means according to claim 10 in which said two sheets of polymeric material comprising the walls of said container are joined to each other along at least one additional interiorly located line of attachment so as to divide at least one of said plurality of channels into two narrower channels of substantially identical width.

12. Container means according to claim 10 in which said two sheets of polymeric material comprising the walls of said container are joined together along one additional interiorly located line of attachment so as to divide one of said plurality of channels into two narrower channels of substantially identical width.

13. Container means according to any one of claims 9 through 12 wherein said lines of attachment are parallel to the sides of said container and said inlet means and said outlet means are located along the top edge of said container.

Container means having a top edge, a bottom edge, a pair of opposed side edges, a pair of walls including two relatively thin, generally flexible sheets of a polymeric material, an inlet for introducing a liquid into said container means, an outlet for withdrawing a liquid from said container means, said sheets of material being joined to each other along at least two relatively narrow, internally located lines of attachment to form within said container means at least three primary channels of substantially equal width, said sheets of material being further joined together along at least one additional line of attachment to subdivide at least one of said three primary channels into two secondary channels of reduced width, the number of secondary channels means never being more than the number of primary channels.

15. Container means according to claim 14 wherein said lines of attachment are parallel to said pair of opposed side edges.

16. Container means according to claim 15 wherein said inlet means and said outlet means are located along said top edge.

17. Container means according to claim 16 wherein the line of attachment immediately adjacent one of said side edges forms a liquid-tight seal with the top edge of said container means and said inlet means is located along said top edge between said one of said side edges and said line of attachment immediately adjacent said one of said side edges.

18. Container means according to claim 17 wherein the line of attachment immediately adjacent the other of said side edges forms a liquid-tight seal with the top edge of said container means and said outlet means is located along said top edge between said other of said side edges and said line of attachment immediately adjacent said other of said side edges.

19. Container means according to claim 18 wherein said additional line of attachment forms a liquid-tight seal with one of said top and bottom edges of said container means.

20. Container means according to claim 19 wherein said additional line of attachment forms a liquid-tight seal with the bottom edge of said container.

21. Container means according to claim 20 having ten channels of relatively wider, substantially equal width and two channels of relatively narrower width.
