Abstract

A system for the on-line analysis and topographic display of human brain electrical activity which includes amplifying filtering and converter circuits for generating a plurality of signals, representing electrical activity at a plurality of predetermined data point locations on a patient'"'"'s head in digital form, a first microprocessor and associated circuits to preprocess the digital signals into a predetermined format, and a second microprocessor and associated topographic map generator forming an image computation and display unit receiving the preprocessed digital signals as inputs from the image computation and display unit the topographic map generator defining a map of a plan or elevation view of the brain containing a plurality of pixel points far in excess of the number of data points and interpolating the digital signals, so as to provide a value for each pixel on the map and providing the pixel information as outputs in synchronism with a horizontal and vertical scan, and a video monitor receiving the output of the image computation and display unit as an input.

Claims

1. A system for the on the on-line anaylsis and topographic display of human brain electrical activity comprising:

(a) means for generating a pluraity of signals in digital form, representing electrical activity measured at a plurality of predetermined electrode locations on a subjects'"'"' head;

(b) means to preprocess said digital signals into a predetermined format;

(c) an image computation and display unit receiving said digital signals from said preprocessing means, including means to define a map of a plan or elevation view of the brain containing a plurality of pixel points far in excess of the number of electrode locations, means for interpolating between said digital signals, so as to provide a value for each pixel on said map, and means to provide said pixel information as outputs in synchronism with a horizontal and vertical scan;

(d) a video monitor receiving the output of said image computation and display unit as an input; and

(e) control means for controlling said means to preprocess and said image computation and display unit.

2. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said preprocessor includes:

a first microprocessor;

a first program memory for said microprocessor;

a first random access memory for said microprocessor;

a first address decoder for said first random access memory;

clock means for providing clock inputs to said microprocessor; and

first input/output ports, said units coupled together by means of address, data and control busses;

said plurality of signals in digital form being an input to one of said first input/output ports.

3. Apparatus according to claim 2 wherein said image computation and display means comprise:

a second microprocessor;

a second program memory;

a second random access memory;

a second address decoder for said second random access memory;

clock and oscillator means;

second input-output ports and a serial communication interface, all of said elements coupled together via address, data and control busses;

a topographic map generator for storing a map file having a plurality of pixels;

means for establishing data values for each pixel; and

a video generator receiving inputs from said topographic map generator for generating video signals.

4. Apparatus according to claim 3 wherein said display is a color display, different signal amplitudes being represented by different preselected colors and including means for converting signal level outputs for each pixel into color video signals.

Apparatus according to claim 4 wherein said means for converting into color video signals comprise first, second, and third random access memories addressing digital-to-analog converters applied to red, green, and blue video display inputs respectively, said random access memories having prestored therein color level information, and a random access address multiplexor for arbitrating access to the random access memory address inputs between the output of said topographic map generator and said second microprocessor.

6. Apparatus according to claim 5 wherein said topographic map generator comprises:

(a) a map file memory containing therein for each of a plurality of pixels a weighting factor for four measured signals corresponding to the electrode locations nearest to the pixel, a pixel address, and an electrode address for each of said four nearest electrode locations;

(b) a plurality of electrode address flip flops;

(c) a plurality of pixel address flip flops;

(d) a plurality of electrode weight flip flops, all of said electrode address flip flops, pixel address flip flops, and electrode weight flip flops coupled to output of said map file in parallel;

(e) a RAM address multiplexor receiving inputs from said electrode address flip flop outputs;

(f) a data buffer RAM containing therein digital data obtained from said preprocessor and addressed by said RAM address multiplexor;

(g) a multiplier receiving as inputs outputs from said data buffer RAM and from said electrode weight flip flops;

(h) control means including a programmable read-only memory for providing, to said multiplier, successive outputs of said buffer memory and electrode weight flip flops which represent the four nearest electrodes, said multiplier adapted to multiply a set of four weights and values and store their sum;

(i) frame buffer memory means for storing the successive outputs of said multiplier each representing a pixel value;

(j) a map file memory counter providing inputs to said map file memory to successively address each pixel located within the outline of a brain image.

7. Apparatus according to claim 6 wherein said control means include:

(a) said programmable read-only memory, programmed to provide at its outputs, the signals necessary to drive said map file memory, electrode address flip flops, pixel address flip flops and electrode weight flip flops;

(b) octal flip flops for buffering the output of said programmable read-only memory; and

(c) means for addressing successive locations in said memory to successively enable for multiplication the four electrode and weight values and to carry out the other functions associated with the multiplication.

8. Apparatus according to claim 7 wherein said means for addressing include:

(a) a binary counter for addressing the memory locations in order;

(b) means to enable said address counter upon receipt of an address decoder signal;

(c) means to reset said address counter after a predetermined number of counts; and

(d) means to initiate a new cycle upon generation of a carry signal from said map file address counter.

9. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said means for generating comprise:

(a) means for generating a plurality of analog signals representative of electrical activity at a plurality of predetermined locations on a patient'"'"'s head;

(b) a signal conditioning unit receiving as inputs said plurality of analog signals for amplifying and filtering said signals to provide an analog output containing frequencies of interest in brain analysis; and

(c) means to convert to convert said analog output to digital signals.

10. Apparatus according to claim 9 wherein means to convert said analog output to a digital signal comprise:

(a) an analog multiplexer receiving, as an input, one of said plurality of signals on each of a plurality of signal channels and having address inputs;

(b) a binary counter providing outputs to the address inputs of said analog multiplexer;

(c) a sample and hold circuit receiving its input from said multiplexer;

(d) an analog to digital converter receiving its input from said sample and hold circuit;

(e) a first in-first out memory receiving its input from said analog to digital converter; and

(f) means for controlling and clocking said memory, enabling said counter to successively couple each of the input channels to said sample and hold amplifier, and causing said sample and hold amplifier to sample each channel and said converter to convert each channel, the outputs of said converter being stored in succession in said memory.

11. Apparatus according to claim 1 and further including character generating means for generating alphanumeric information on said monitor.

12. A method of defining a topographic map comprising:

(a) establishing a map file memory containing therein for each of a plurality of pixels a weighting factor for four measured signals corresponding to the electrode locations nearest to the pixel, a pixel address, and an electrode address for each of said four nearest electrode locations;

(b) transferring electrode addresses in sequence to a plurality of electrode address flip flops;

(c) transferring pixel addresses in sequence to a plurality of electrode pixel address flip flops;

(d) transferring weighting factors in sequence to a plurality of electrode weight flip flops;

(e) storing in a data buffer memory ram digital data obtained from said preprocessor;

(f) multiplying with a multiplier outputs from the data buffer memory and from the electrode weight flip flops;

(g) controlling operation of said multiplier using a programmable read-only memory for providing to said multiplier, successive outputs of said buffer memory and electrode weight flip flops representing the flow nearest electrodes;

(h) summing the products of four weights and their respective data point values.

13. The method according to claim 12 wherein said step of controlling comprises:

programming said programmable read-only memory, to provide at its outputs, the signals necessary to drive said map file memory, electrode address flip flops, pixel address flip flops and electrode weight flip flops;

buffering the output of said programmable read-only memory; and

addressing successive locations in said memory to successively enable for multiplication the four electrode and weight values and to carry out the other functions associated with the multiplication, resetting said address counter after completion; and

initiating a new cycle upon generation of a carry signal from said map file address counter.

14. Apparatus for computing and supplying an image into a frame buffer, while simultaneously allowing display of a previously generated image in said frame buffer, comprising:

a. a clock having two phases;

b. A CRT display controller having as control input one phase of said clock and providing sequential frame buffer addresses to said frame buffer in response to said one phase;

c. means for computing an image; and

d. means for providing the outputs of said computing means to the frame buffer during the other phase of said clock, whereby access to the frame buffer by said means for computing and display controller will be arbitrated.

15. Apparatus according to claim 14, wherein said means for computing an image comprises:

a. a data memory;

b. means for supplying data to said memory;

c. means for generating a topographic map from said data;

d. means for arbitrating access to said data memory between said means for supplying and means for generating; and

e. means for starting and stopping said means for generating.

16. Apparatus according to claim 15, wherein said means for generating comprise:

a. a map file memory containing therein for each of a plurality of pixels a weighting factor for four measured signals corresponding to the electrode locations nearest to the pixel, a pixel address, and an electrode address for each of said four nearest electrode locations;

b. a multiplier obtaining data inputs from said data memory and weighting inputs from said map file memory;

c. control means including a programmable read-only memory for providing, to said multiplier, successive outputs of said data memory and electrode weighting inputs which represent the four nearest electrode locations, said multiplier adapted to multiply a set of four weight and values and store their sum; and

d. memory means for said frame buffer for storing the successive outputs of said multiplier each representing a pixel value.

17. Apparatus according to claim 16, wherein:

a. said map file memory further contains for each pixel, a pixel address and an electrode address of said four nearest locations;

b. a plurality of electrode address flip-flops;

c. a plurality of pixel address flip-flops;

d. a plurality of electrode weight flip-flops, all of said flip-flops coupled to outputs of said map file in parallel;

e. said data memory comprises a RAM;

f. a RAM address multiplexer receiving inputs from said electrode address flip-flop outputs;

g. a data buffer RAM containing therein digital data to be mapped, addressed by said RAM address mulitplexer;

h. control means including a programmable read-only memory for providing, to said multiplier, successive outputs of said buffer memory and electrode weight flip-flops which represent the four nearest electrodes, said multiplier adapted to multiply a set of four weights and values and store their sum; and

i. a map file memory counter providing inputs to said map file memory to successively address each pixel location within a brain outline.

18. Apparatus according to claim 17 wherein said control means include:

(a) said programmable read-only memory, programmed to provide at its outputs, the signals necessary to drive said map file memory, electrode address flip flops, pixel address flip flops and electrode weight flip flops;

(b) octal flip flops for buffering the output of said programmable read-only memory;

(c) and means for addressing successive locations in said memory to successively enable for multiplication the four electrode and weight values and to carry out the other functions associated with the multiplication.

19. Apparatus according to claim 18 wherein said means for addressing include:

(a) a binary counter for addressing the memory locations in order;

(b) means to enable said address counter upon receipt of an address decoder signal;

(c) means to reset said address counter after a predetermined number of counts; and

(d) means to initiate a new cycle upon generation of a carry signal from said map file address counter.

20. Apparatus according to claim 17, and further including a video generator receiving inputs from said topographic map generator for generating video signals.

21. Apparatus for computing an image comprising:

a. a digital data memory;

b. means for supplying a set of digital data to said memory;

c. means for generating an image frame of a topographic map from said set of digital data;

d. means for arbitrating access to said digital data memory between said means for supplying and means for generating; and

e. means for automatically starting said means for generating after a full set of data is supplied thereto and for stopping said means for generating after an image frame has been generated.

22. Apparatus according to claim 21, wherein said means for generating comprise:

a. a map file memory containing therein for each of a plurality of pixels a weighting factor for four nearest measured signals corresponding to electrode locations nearest to the pixel, a pixel address, and an electrode address for each of said four nearest electrode locations;

b. a multiplier obtaining data inputs from said data memory and weighting inputs from said map file memory;

c. control means for providing, to said multiplier, successive outputs of said data memory and electrode weighting inputs which represent the four nearest electrodes, said multiplier adapted to multiply a set of four weights and values and store their sum; and

d. memory means for said frame buffer for storing the successive outputs of said multiplier each representing a pixel value.

23. Apparatus according to claim 22, wherein:

said map file memory further contains for each pixel, a pixel address and an electrode address of said four nearest electrode locations;

a. a plurality of electrode address flip-flops;

b. a plurality of pixel address flip-flops;

c. a plurality of electrode weight flip-flops, all of said flip-flops coupled to outputs of said map file in parallel;

d. said digital data memory comprises a RAM;

e. a RAM address multiplexor receiving inputs from said electrode address flip-flop outputs;

f. a data buffer RAM containing therein digital data to be mapped, addressed by said RAM address multiplexor;

g. said control means including a programable read-only memory for providing, to said multiplier, successive outputs of said data buffer RAM and electrode weight flip-flops which represent the four nearest electrodes, and

h. a map file memory counter providing inputs to said map file memory to successively address each pixel location within the outline of a brain image.

24. Apparatus according to claim 23, and further including a video generator receiving inputs from said topographic map generator for generating video signals.
