Abstract

Self contained radio transmitting state estimator modules are mounted on power conductors on both sides of power transformers in electrical substations and on power conductors at various places along electrical transmission lines. They are electrically isolated from ground and all other conductors. These modules are capable of measuring current, voltage, frequency and power factor (or the fourier components thereof) the temperature of the conductor, and the temperature of the ambient air. The modules transmit these parameters to local receivers. The receivers are connected by an appropriate data transmission link, to a power control center which allows determination of the state of the power system. Appropriate control signals are transmitted back to the electrical switchgear of the system to bring it to the appropriate optimum state. Direct local control may also be effected, for example, the prevention of overloading a transformer. A "donut" state estimator module comprises a novel hot stick operated hinge clamp and a novel voltage sensor which measures the current between an isolated capacitor plate and ground. The donut measures the fourier components of voltage and current over a number of cycles and transmits the components to the local receiver. The local receiver derives the desired electrical measurements such as voltage, current, power factor, power, and reactive power and transmits them to local or remote control stations. Up to 15 donut modules may transmit on a single channel to a single local receiver. Each transmits at intervals which are an integral number. The intervals between transmissions of all donuts do not have a common factor and the average interval is the desired transmission rate. Each donut uses the zero crossover of current of its conductor to establish its transmission interval. The system is self-calibrating using known reference signals within the donut module.

Claims

1. Apparatus for mounting a sensing device on a power line conductor comprising:

a generally toroidal shaped housing for containing said sensing device, said housing comprising two semi-annular housing sections with opposed clamping faces;

a hinge mechanism comprising a pair of hinge pins for connecting each of said housing sections to said mechanism and for enabling said sections to move to an open position to admit said power line conductor and for enabling said sections to move to a closed position about said conductor;

a pair of section operating members each attached between one of said hinge pins and a clamping face of one of said sections;

a loop of cable mounted about said section operating members where said operating members attach to said opposed clamping faces; and

cable pulling means for pulling said loop of cable and drawing said section operating members together whereby said opposed faces move toward each other and said housing moves toward a closed position.

2. Apparatus as defined in claim 1 further comprising a nut mounted to said hinge mechanism in a fixed position;

and

a barrel screw having an axial splined opening therein for receiving a splined shaft;

said barrel screw further having oppositely threaded screw ends with one of said ends threaded into said cable pulling means and the other end threaded into said nut; and

wherein said barrel screw, in response to the turning movement of a received splined shaft, rotates in one direction to move said cable pulling means away from said fixed nut causing said housing sections to move apart.

3. Apparatus as defined in claim 2 in which each of said section operating members further comprises an arm connected between one of said hinge pins and a clamping face of one of said sections;

and

wherein said apparatus further includes a wedge for pushing said arms apart to move said sections to an open position.

4. Apparatus as defined in claim 3 in which said wedge is part of said cable pulling means and said wedge pushes said arms apart in response to said barrel screw rotating in one direction.

5. Apparatus as defined in claim 4 in which said arms are connected for rotational movement about said hinge pins.

6. Apparatus as defined in claim 5 wherein said cable pulling means comprises at least one key and said hinge mechanism comprises at least one cooperating keyway.

7. Apparatus for clamping a two-section housing around a power conductor comprising:

two housing sections with opposed clamping faces;

a hinge mechanism comprising a pair of hinges for connecting each of housing sections to said hinge mechanism for movement of said housing sections toward each other and away from each other;

a pair of secton operating members each attached between one of said hinges and one of said housing sections at said clamping face;

means coupled to said pair of section operating members for pulling said members together whereby said housing sections are pulled together to a closed position about said conductor;

means coupled to said pair of section operating members for pushing said members apart whereby said housing sections are pushed apart to an open position; and

means for controlling said means for pulling and means for pushing.

8. Apparatus as defined in claim 7 wherein said means for controlling includes:

a nut mounted to said hinge mechanism in a fixed position;

a barrel screw having an axial splined opening therein for receiving a splined shaft;

said barrel screw further having oppositely threaded screw ends with one of said ends threaded into said means for pushing and the other end threaded into said nut;

wherein said means for pulling is attached to said means for pushing; and

wherein said barrel screw, in response to the turning movement of a received splind shaft, rotates in one direction to move said means for pushing away from said fixed nut, and rotates in an opposite direction to move said means for pulling toward said fixed nut.

9. Apparatus as defined in claim 8 wherein said means for pushing includes a wedge for pushing said section operating members apart.

10. Apparatus as defined in claim 8 wherein said means for pulling includes a cable for pulling said section operating members together.
