Abstract

An apparatus and a method of use for removing specified dialyzable components from a complex reference fluid such as, for example, blood. The invention includes a semi-permeable tubular dialysis membrane, which is inserted into the reference fluid. An equilibration fluid is injected into the tubular membrane and allowed to equilibrate with the outside reference fluid. The equilibrated fluid is then removed for analysis.

Claims

1. An apparatus for equilibrating dialyzable components in a complex fluid which includes a reference fluid and higher molecular weight components, comprising:

(1) a body portion including a flexible, elongated tubular semi-permeable dialyzing membrane having a closed distal end and a proximal end, said body portion further including a single first lumen within said dialyzing membrane;

(2) means within said first lumen for analyzing said dialyzable components; and

(3) fluid communication means adapted to pass a membrane solution to and from said body portion, wherein the dialyzing membrane is freely permeable to the reference fluid and the membrane solution and substantially impermeable to the higher molecular weight components.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the dialyzing membrane comprises materials selected from the group consisting of dimethyl silicone, methyl-vinyl-polysiloxane, polycarbonate silicone copolymers, expanded tetrafluorethylene and expanded polypropylene.

The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said fluid communication means comprises a tubular conduit having a second lumen along the longitudinal axis, said conduit having a first and second end wherein said first end of said conduit is attached to said proximal end of said body portion such that the first and second lumens communicate directly with each other.

4. The apparatus according to claim 3, further comprising means for injecting and withdrawing said membrane solution into said second lumen, said means for injecting and withdrawing being connected to said conduit.

5. The apparatus according to claim 4, wherein said second end of said conduit is sealed by a self-sealing means.

6. The apparatus according to claim 5, wherein said means for injecting and withdrawing said membrane solution is a needle and syringe combination wherein said needle passes through said self-sealing means.

7. The apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising means with said lumen for maintaining the longitudinal integrity of said body portion.

8. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said analyzing means is an ion selective electrode.

9. The apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising means for interpreting the information generated by said analyzing means.

10. A method for equilibrating dialyzable components in a complex fluid, which includes a reference fluid and higher molecular weight components, comprising:

(1) a body portion including a flexible, elongated tubular semi-permeable dialyzing membrane having a closed distal end and a proximal end, said body portion further including a single lumen within said dialyzing membrane, means within said lumen for analyzing said dialyzable components, and fluid communication means adapted to pass a membrane solution to and from said body portion, wherein the dialyzing membrane is freely permeable to the reference fluid and the membrane solution and substantially impermeable to higher molecular weight components;

(2) injecting the membrane solution into said lumen of said tubular membrane;

(3) maintaining said membrane solution in said lumen of said tubular membrane for a time sufficient to equilibrate said membrane solution; and

(4) analyzing said equilibrated membrane solution by said means within said lumen for analyzing said dialyzable components.
