A process for passivating mercury present as a contaminant on gas processing equipment comprising contacting said mercury with a liquid solvent containing at least in part sulfur or a sulfur-containing compound selected from the group consisting of free elemental sulfur, colloidal sulfur, hydrogen sulfide, monosulfides, polysulfides and alkyl thiols said liquid solvent being selected from the group consisting of benzene, toluene, methanol, butane, propane, gas condensate, ethane, ethanol, propanol, carbon disulfide and mixtures thereof.
