Abstract

A probe for ultrasound testing or treatment of a molten metal comprises:

an ultrasound-transmitting rod (10) of which one end is a "downstream" end (12) adapted to contact molten metal under test or treatment;

a piezoelectric crystal (50) adapted to supply ultrasound to or receive ultrasound from the rod (10); and

rod-cooling means (16) located near to the downstream end (12) of the rod (10).

A method for the treatment of a liquid metal melt, to reduce the number of inhomogeneous particles distributed through the melt comprises:

creating a standing wave of ultrasound energy within the melt, e.g. using a probe as defined above, whereby the inhomogeneous particles concentrate, and are encouraged to coalesce, at the nodes of the standing wave; and

separating the coalesced particles from the bulk of the liquid melt.

Claims

1. A method for the treatment of a liquid metal melt having particles which are inhomogeneous with and distributed through the liquid metal melt, to reduce the number of particles therein comprising:

creating a standing wave including a node, in the liquid metal melt by transmitting ultrasound energy therethrough, whereby the particles concentrate, and are encouraged to coalesce in the liquid metal melt, at the nodes of the standing wave; and

removing coalesced particles from the liquid metal melt, thereby resulting in a purified liquid metal melt.

2. A method according to claim 1, which additionally comprises withdrawing a rod of purified metal from the purified liquid metal melt in the vicinity of the standing wave, by horizontal casting.

3. A method according to claim 1, wherein the standing wave is created by inserting a probe into said liquid metal melt for transmitting the ultrasound energy within said liquid metal melt;

reflecting the ultrasound energy back to the probe along a pathway through the liquid metal melt; and

adusting the frequency of the ultrasound energy supplied by the probe to a value required to ensure that a standing wave is always present in the liquid metal melt.

4. A method according to claim 3, wherein the ultrasound energy is supplied and reflected along a substantially horizontal pathway through the liquid metal melt.

A method according to claim 3, which comprises monitoring the standing wave to ensure the standing wave is properly created and maintained by transmitting ultrasound energy from a second probe towards the standing wave so that the ultrasound energy, reflects off coalesced particles concentrated at the nodes of the standing wave and receiving the reflected ultrasound energy at the second probe.
