Abstract

The present invention describes devices capable of sensing changes of acidity in a non-aqueous medium. The devices are particularly useful for determining the alkaline reserve in a motor vehicle lubricating oil.

Claims

1. A device for determining the acidic hydrogen concentration of a substantially non-aqueous medium wherein the device includes an organic polymer capable of accepting protons, suitable means for exposing the organic polymer to the medium and protons therein, means for transmitting an electric current to and from the organic polymer capable of accepting protons and suitable means for measuring differences in resistance through the organic polymer due to the acceptance of protons.

2. The device of claim 1 located in an engine oil sump at a point so as to be substantially immersed in an oil of lubricating viscosity when the engine is operating.

3. The device of claim 1 wherein the device is disposed in a crankcase oil filter.

4. The device of claim 2 wherein the crankcase oil filter is a disposable filter.

5. The device of claim 1 located in an oil drain plug.

6. The device of claim 1 mounted for use in a gas.

7. The device of claim 1 wherein the organic polymer is partially deprotonated and then partially reprotonated.

8. The device of claim 7 wherein the organic polymer is polyaniline hydrochloride.

9. The device of claim 1 wherein the acidic hydrogen concentration is determined on a noncontinuous basis.

10. The device of claim 1 wherein the organic polymer is located within a substantially non-aqueous medium such that the greatest exposed surface area of the organic polymer is substantially coincidental to the gravitational vector.

11. The device of claim 1 wherein the organic polymer is compressed into a solid.

12. The device of claim 1 wherein the means for transmitting current include at least two terminals connected to an ohm meter.

13. The device of claim 12 wherein there are two terminals located such that a straight line between the terminals is substantially coincidental to the gravitational vector.

14. A method for sensing the acidic hydrogen concentration of a substantially non-aqueous medium comprising obtaining an organic polymer capable of accepting protons, making a first measurement of the resistance of the organic polymer, exposing the medium containing protons to the organic polymer, then making a second measurement of the resistance of the organic polymer wherein the degree of acidic hydrogen concentration of the substantially non-aqueous medium is determined.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein the organic polymer is deprotonated prior to its use in determining the acidic hydrogen concentration.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein the organic polymer is partially reprotonated after being obtained in its substantially deprotonated form.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein the partially reprotonated organic polymer is polyaniline hydrochloride.

18. The method of claim 14 wherein the organic polymer is compressed into a solid.

19. The method of claim 18 wherein the organic polymer is based on aniline.

20. The method of claim 14 wherein the organic polymer is based on aniline or pyrrole or mixtures thereof.

21. The method of claim 14 wherein the acidic hydrogen concentration is determined by applying a current through the organic polymer on a noncontinuous basis.

22. The method of claim 14 wherein the organic polymer is substantially free of metal or graphite.

23. The method of claim 14 wherein the organic polymer is located within the substantially non-aqueous medium such that the greatest exposed surface area of the organic polymer is substantially coincidental to the gravitational vector.

24. The method of claim 14 wherein the maximum dimension of one of the two minor axises of the organic polymer is less than about 0.65 mm at its greatest point.

25. The method of claim 14 wherein the substantially non-aqueous medium is an oil of lubricating viscosity.

26. A method for determining a relatively low acidic hydrogen concentration of a medium by:

(a) measuring the conductivity of an organic polymer capable of accepting protons;

(b) introducing the organic polymer to the medium containing protons;

(c) removing the organic polymer from the medium;

(d) determining the difference in resistance of the organic polymer due to acceptance of protons;

(e) correlating the difference in resistance to the acidic hydrogen concentration in the medium.

27. The method of claim 26 wherein the medium is water.
