Transendoscopic needle
First Claim
1. A biopsy specimen securing device comprised of an outer flexible catheter having distal and proximal ends, said distal end including a protective hub secured thereto, a hollow needle reciprocally mounted within said hollow catheter so as to be axially movable between a first extended and a second retracted position, said needle having proximal and distal ends, means defining a lateral opening into said hollow needle, control means secured to said needle for controlling the axial movement thereof, said control means being spaced interiorly of said outer catheter thereby defining an annular space therebetween along the length of said device, and sealing means for providing a rolling seal along the outer surface of the needle, between said lateral opening and the distal end of said needle relative to the inner surface of said catheter so that a fluid passageway is defined by the hollow interior of said catheter and said hollow needle through said lateral opening means.

Abstract
A biopsy needle assembly comprised of an outer flexible catheter and a reciprocating interior structure on which the needle is mounted. In one embodiment, the needle is directly connected to an internal guide wire. In another, the needle is directly connected to an inner flexible catheter and the guide wire can either extend through the needle or be stopped within the needle. In each embodiment, the needle includes a lateral opening providing a fluid path from the hollow needle, through the catheter, either between the catheter and guide wire or the inner and outer catheters to an outlet at the proximal end of the assembly. The invention also relates to a syringe plunger stop end lock attachment.

- 2. A tissue specimen collecting assembly for cooperating with an endoscope type examination device, said collecting assembly comprising an outer hollow flexible catheter having proximal and distal ends, a hollow needle having proximal and distal ends and positioned so as to move axially within said hollow catheter relative at least to the distal end thereof between an extended position, where the distal end of the needle projects axially beyond said catheter distal end, and a retracted position in which the needle distal end lies at least interiorly of said catheter distal end, at least a portion of said hollow needle being spaced radially inwardly from said outer hollow flexible catheter defining a chamber there between, means defining an opening in said hollow needle spaced axially inwardly from the distal end thereof so that when the needle is in its extended position said opening will be positioned on the proximal side of the catheter distal end, control means, spaced radially inwardly from said outer hollow flexible catheter defining a chamber there between, for controlling the axial movement of said needle, and sealing means for establishing a sliding seal between said outer hollow flexible catheter and said hollow so that when said needle is in both its retracted and extended positions the sliding seal will permit relative movement between said needle and said outer hollow flexible catheter and remain positioned between the distal end of said hollow needle and said opening so that the chamber defined between said control means and said flexible hollow catheter remains sealed relative to the chamber defined between said hollow needle and said flexible hollow catheter.

15. A biopsy needle for use in obtaining specimen tissue samples comprising:
-
a flexible hollow catheter having means defining a hardened distal end; a hollow needle slidably positioned within said hollow catheter adjacent said distal end with at least a portion of said hollow needle lying within said flexible hollow catheter and being spaced radially inwardly therefrom defining a chamber there between, said needle including proximal and distal ends and a sidewall there between, said needle distal end being sharpened; said hollow needle further including means defining a lateral opening positioned in the sidewall thereof; sealing means positioned between said flexible hollow catheter and said hollow needle for providing a sliding seal there between and between said lateral opening mean and the distal end of said needle along the exterior of said needle; and control means, attached to the proximal end of said hollow needle and spaced inwardly from the interior of said flexible hollow catheter to define a chamber there between, for moving said hollow needle between advanced and retracted positions so that when in both said advanced and retracted positions said lateral opening means remains positioned within said hollow catheter and on the proximal side of said sealing means and the chamber defined between said control means and said flexible hollow catheter on the proximal side of said sealing means remains sealed relative to the chamber defined between said hollow needle and said flexible hollow catheter on the distal side of said sealing means. - View Dependent Claims (16, 17)
