1. A heat exchanger comprising a reactor section which is connected to supply lines for a flowable composition and through which a flowable composition is passed for effecting a chemical reaction and which comprises a metal structure having a large internal surface comprising a catalytic substance, anda heat transfer section including at least one gas-tight flow passage for a separate heat transfer fluid of the type having a selected phase transition temperature wherein:

  • said metal structure comprises porous, sintered metal, said sintered metal being directly heat conductivity joined to a gastight boundary layer which has a high heat transfer coefficient, the flow passage of said heat transfer section comprising in cross-section, at least in part of its length, porous sintered metal which is directly heat conductively joined to said boundary layer on that side of the reactor section which is opposite to the sintered metal, andmeans to conduct said separate heat transfer fluid through said flow passage of said heat transfer section in correlation to the chemical reaction so that the heat transfer fluid will undergo a phase transition at said phase transition temperature thereof in response to said flowable composition undergoing the chemical reaction.
