Abstract

An optical fiber tap which is especially useful as a node in a ring topology data processing system. The tap, which does not interrupt the physical continuity of the fiber, has an open position and a closed position. In the open position, a signal passing down the optical fiber passes through the tap without alteration. In the closed position, a signal passing down the optical fiber is extracted through a first bend which is put into the fiber by the tap; the extracted signal, or an electrical counterpart thereof, is processed and a counterpart of the extracted signal, or a new signal obtained by operating on the extracted signal, e.g. in a data processor, is injected into the fiber through a second bend which is put into the fiber by the tap.

Claims

1. A method of tapping an optical fiber carrying a first optical signal therein, comprising the steps of:

withdrawing a first part of the first optical signal from the fiber at a first location;

attenuating a second part of the first optical signal from the fiber at a second position located downstream from the first position; and

injecting a second optical signal into the fiber at a third position downstream from the first and second positions.

2. The method of claim 1, the second part of the first optical signal being withdrawn to prevent confusion between the injected second optical signal and any part of the first optical signal not withdrawn or attenuated.

3. The method of claim 1, the optical fiber comprising a core, a cladding, and a buffer, the first part of the optical signal being withdrawn through the fiber buffer, the second optical signal being injected through the fiber buffer.

4. The method of claim 3, the optical fiber core and cladding being made of glass.

5. The method of claim 3, the optical fiber core being made of glass, the buffer and cladding being the same and being made of plastic.

6. The method of claim 1, the first part of the optical signal being withdrawn by bending a first part of the optical fiber and withdrawing the first part of the optical signal from the optical fiber first bent part and into a first optical coupler.

7. The method of claim 6, further comprising the step of detecting the first part of the first optical signal.

8. The method of claim 7, the second optical signal being injected into the optical fiber by bending a second part of the optical fiber and injecting the second optical signal into the optical fiber second bent part by passing the second optical signal through a second optical coupler.

9. The method of claim 1, the steps of withdrawing, attenuating and injecting being performed on a single optical fiber.

10. The method of claim 1, the second optical signal representing information substantially identical to that represented by the first optical signal.

11. The method of claim 1, the second optical signal representing information different from information represented by the first optical signal.

12. The method of claim 1, the fiber forming part of the ring network.

13. The method of claim 8, the fiber being bent about a radius between 1.5 and 15 mm.

14. An apparatus for tapping an optical fiber carrying a first optical signal therein, comprising:

means for withdrawing a first part of the first optical signal from the fiber at a first location;

means for attenuating a second part of the first optical signal from the fiber at a second position located downstream from the first position; and

means for injecting a second optical signal into the optical fiber at a third position located downstream from the first and second positions, the withdrawing means, attenuating means, and injecting means operating on a single optical fiber, the optical fiber comprising a glass core and a glass cladding surrounded by a buffer.

15. The apparatus of claim 14 further comprising:

means for selectively engaging and disengaging the withdrawing means, attenuating means, and the injecting means such that when disengaged the first optical signal travels past the apparatus without alteration and such that when engaged the first and second parts of the first optical signal are withdrawn and attenuated respectively by the withdrawing means and attenuating means respectively and the second optical signal is injected by the injecting means.

The apparatus of claim 15, the apparatus being non-destructive such that the first and second parts of the first optical signal are withdrawn and attenuated respectively and the second optical signal is injected along a continuous length of the fiber which is not broken, stripped, or terminated.

17. A ring topology data system, comprising:

an optical fiber disposed so as to form a ring network;

a plurality of nodes attached to the networks, and each node including a tap, each tap including;

means for withdrawing a first part of an original optical signal entering the node from the fiber at a first location,

means for attenuating a second part the original optical signal from the fiber at a second position located downstream from the first position, and

means for injecting another optical signal into the fiber at a third position located downstream from the first and second positions.

18. The ring topology data system of claim 17, each tap being nondestructive such that the signal parts and the another optical signal are withdrawn, attenuated, and injected respectively along a continuous length of the fiber which is not broken, stripped, or terminated.
