Abstract

An abrasion and solvent resistant polyurethane protective coating for bilayer windshields is formulated by the reaction of a polyester or polyether diol with an aliphatic isocyanate-terminated prepolymer.

Claims

1. An abrasion-resistant polyurethane coating composition comprising:

a. a branched prepolymer having an isocyanate functionality greater that 2; and

b. a hydroxy-terminated linear polymeric polyol selected from the group consisting of polyethers and polyesters having a molecular weight between 300 and 5,000.

2. An abrasion-resistant polyurethane coating composition according to claim 1, wherein said hydroxy-terminated polyol is a diol.

3. An abrasion-resistant polyurethane coating composition according to claim 2, wherein said diol is a polyether diol.

4. An abrasion-resistant polyurethane coating composition according to claim 3, wherein said polyether diol is polytetramethylene ether glycol.

5. An abrasion-resistant polyurethane coating composition according to claim 2, wherein said diol is a poyester diol.

6. An abrasion-resistant polyurethane coating composition according to claim 5, wherein said polyester diol is a polycaprolactone diol.

7. An abrasion-resistant polyurethane coating composition according to claim 1, wherein said branched prepolymer is an isocyanate-terminated prepolymer reaction product of a diisocyanate and a triol.

8. An abrasion-resistant polyurethane coating composition according to claim 7, wherein said isocyanate-terminated prepolymer is the reaction product of a diisocyanate selected from the group consisting of isophorone diisocyanate and methylene bis(cyclohexyl isocyanate).

9. An abrasion-resistant polyurethane coating composition according to claim 8, wherein said isocyanate-terminated prepolymer is the reaction product of a diisocyanate with trimethylol propane.

10. An abrasion-resistant polyurethane coating composition according to claim 1, further comprising ultraviolet light absorbing compound and antioxidant compound.
