Abstract

In one exemplar embodiment, method and apparatus for controlling capacity of a multiple-stage cooling system is disclosed which utilizes means for establishing a single predetermined cooling stage "cut-in" pressure and a single predetermined cooling stage "cut-out" pressure, means for determining that the "cut-in" or "cut-out" pressures have been reached in the system, a delay means for introducing a selected minimum time delay after determining that the refrigerant fluid pressure has either reached the established "cut-in" or "cut-out" pressures, and control means for controlling the turning on or off of the next cooling stage after the time delay has elapsed.

Claims

1. A method for controlling system compressor capacity in a refrigeration system having a plurality of equal capacity, commonly piped compressors to obtain an energy efficient operating system, comprising the steps of:

(a) establishing an operation suction pressure range having an upper limit and a lower limit;

(b) setting the suction pressure range to obtain an operating average suction pressure therein that results in an optimal operating efficiency for said system;

(c) detecting the suction pressure in the system for determining when said pressure exceeds said upper limit and when said pressure is below said lower limit;

(d) generating an increase capacity signal when said operating suction pressure exceeds said upper limit and a decrease capacity signal when said operation suction pressure is below said lower limit; and

(e) applying said increase capacity signal and said decrease capacity signal to said compressors to respectively energize and deenergize said compressors in a sequence, said sequence permitting at least N incremental system capacity changes to occur between successive energizations of any one of said compressors, where N is the number of compressors in the system and each incremental system capacity change is equal to the capacity of a compressor.

10. The method of claim 1 or 5 wherein said step of establishing an operating suction pressure range comprises the step of establishing a single suction pressure for said pressure range such that the single pressure functions as both said upper and lower pressure limits.

12. The method as described in claims 1 or 5, further including the step of providing a time delay prior to energizing or deenergizing a subsequent compressor in the system.

2. Apparatus for controlling system compressor capacity in a refrigeration system having a plurality of equal capacity, commonly piped compressors to obtain an energy efficient operating system, comprising:

(a) a pressure selecting means for establishing an operating suction pressure range having an upper limit and a lower limit, and for setting the suction pressure range to obtain an operating average suction pressure therein that results in an optimal operating efficiency for said system;

(b) a detection means for sensing the suction pressure in the system and cooperating with said pressure selecting means for determining when said pressure exceeds said upper limit and providing an increase capacity signal in response thereto, and when said pressure is below said lower limit an providing a decreased capacity signal in response thereto;

(c) a sequencing means connected to said detection means for establishing a sequence for control signals for energizing the compressors in response to an increase capacity signal where the compressor next to be energized is the compressor deenergized for the longest time, and for establishing a sequence for control signals for deenergizing the compressors in response to a decrease capacity signal where the compressor next to be deenergized is the compressor energized for the longest time; and

(d) a control circuit means connected to said sequencing means for applying said control signals to said compressors, said sequence permitting at least N incremental system capacity changes between successive energizations of any one of said compressors, where N is the number of compressors in the system, and each incremental system capacity change is equal to the capacity of one said compressor, thereby to operate with an average suction line pressure within a narrow pressure control range to minimize energy consumption.

3. The apparatus as described in claim 2, further including time delay means for providing a time delay prior to energizing or deenergizing a subsequent compressor in the system.

The apparatus as described in claim 3, wherein said time delay means comprises a timing circuit for receiving said increase capacity and decrease capacity signals from said detection means and in response thereto generating delayed increase capacity or decrease capacity signals applied to said sequencing means.

11. The apparatus of claims 2, 6 or 9 wherein said suction pressure range comprises a single suction pressure where the single pressure functions for both said upper and lower pressure limits.

5. A method for controlling system compressor capacity in a refrigeration system having a plurality of equal capacity, commonly piped compressors to obtain an energy efficient operating system, comprising the steps of:

(a) establishing an operation suction pressure range having an upper limit and a lower limit;

(b) setting the suction pressure range to obtain an operating average suction pressure therein that results in an optimal operating efficiency for said system;

(c) detecting the suction pressure in the system for determining when said pressure exceeds said upper limit and generating an increase capacity signal in response thereto, and when said pressure is below said lower limit and generating a decrease capacity signal in response thereto; and

(d) selectively energizing and deenergizing said compressors in a sequence in response to the respective increase capacity signals and the decrease capacity signals to provide combinations of energized compressors that exceed in number the number of said compressors in the system so that the capacity of the system may be selected to match the common pressure load thereby allowing a narrow operating pressure control range, said sequence permitting at least N incremental system capacity changes between successive energizations of any one of said compressors, where N is the number of compressors in the system, thereby

(i) permitting the system to change system compressor capacity more often than changes are made in the energization state for any one of said compressors, and

(ii) permitting said system to operate with an average suction line pressure within said narrow pressure control range and obtain an optimal operating efficiency of performance.

6. Apparatus for controlling system compressor capacity in a refrigeration system having a plurality of equal capacity, commonly piped compressors to obtain an energy efficient operating system, comprising:

(a) a pressure selecting means for establishing an operating suction pressure range having an upper limit and a lower limit, and for setting the suction pressure range to obtain an operating average suction pressure therein that results in an optimal operating efficiency for said system;

(b) a detection means for sensing the suction pressure in the system and cooperating with said pressure selecting means for determining when said pressure exceeds said upper limit and providing an increase capacity signal in response thereto, and when said pressure is below said lower limit and providing a decreased capacity signal in response thereto; and

(c) a selection means for receiving said increase capacity signals and said decrease capacity signals and in respective response thereto, selectively energizing and deenergizing said compressors in a sequence to provide combinations of energized compressors that exceed in number the number of said compressors in the system so that the capacity of the system may be controlled to match the common pressure load, said sequence permitting at least N incremental system capacity changes between successive energizations of any said compressor, where N is the number of compressors in the system, thereby

(i) permitting the system to change system compressor capacity more often than changes are made in the energization state for any one of said compressors, and

(ii) permitting said system to operate with an average suction line pressure within a narrow pressure control range to minimize energy consumption.

7. The apparatus as described in claim 6, wherein said pressure selecting means comprises:

(a) a voltage source; and

(b) at least one variable resistance means connected to said voltage source for supplying a voltage signal representative of each of said operating suction pressure range limits.

8. The apparatus as described in claim 6, further including time delay means for providing a time delay prior to energizing and deenergizing a subsequent compressor in the system.

9. A refrigeration system having a plurality of equal capacity, commonly piped compressors and a compressor controller circuit for controlling system compressor capacity to obtain an energy efficient operating system, said controller circuit comprising:

(a) a pressure range adjustment means for establishing a suction line pressure control range having an upper and a lower limit, and for setting the suction pressure range to obtain an operating average suction pressure therein that results in an optimal operating efficiency for said system;

(b) a measurement means for detecting the level of suction pressure in said system and generating an increase capacity signal if the suction pressure exceeds said upper limit and for generating a decrease capacity signal if the suction pressure drops below said lower limit; and

(c) a selection means for receiving said increase capacity signals and said decrease capacity signals and in respective response thereto, selectively energizing and deenergizing said compressors in a sequence to provide combinations of energized compressors that exceed in number the number of said compressors in the system so that the capacity of the system may be controlled to match the common pressure load, said sequence

(i) generating an energizing signal for the compressor which has been turned off the longest period of time in response to an increase capacity signal from said measurement means and for generating a deenergizing signal for the compressor which has been turned on the longest period of time in response to a decrease capacity signal from said measurement means,

(ii) permitting at least N incremental system capacity changes between successive energizations of any one of said compressors, where N is the number of compressors in the system, thereby permitting the system to change system compressor capacity more often than changes are made in the energization state for any one of said compressors.

13. The system of claim 9, further including signal delay means connected to said measurement means for receiving said increase capacity and decrease capacity signals for providing a time delay prior to energizing and deenergizing a subsequent compressor in the system.
