A lozenge having an acceptable taste upon dissolution in the absence of smoking but providing an unpleasant taste upon smoking, the sole smoking deterrent active ingredient in said lozenge consisting essentially of from 0.1 mg to not more than 2.5 mg of silver acetate uniformly distributed in a lozenge base, said lozenge providing a uniform release of said silver acetate upon dissolution of said lozenge base in the mouth, said lozenge base containing as its major component a quantity of sweetener sufficient to produce a ratio of sweetness intensity to silver acetate of from 100:
