Abstract

A reverse osmosis system including a reverse osmosis filter with a reverse osmosis membrane and having an inlet port coupled to a source of feed water under predetermined pressure via a feed water inlet conduit, a product water outlet port for filtered outlet product water, and a brine outlet port for brine. A pump coupled into the feed water inlet conduit between the source of feed water and the inlet port of the filter and driven by the feed water under pressure. The pump increases the pressure of the feed water so that the reverse osmosis filter receives feed water at an increased pressure.

Claims

1. In a reverse osmosis system including a reverse osmosis filter with a reverse osmosis membrane and having an inlet port connectable to a source of feed water under a predetermined pressure via a feed water inlet conduit, a product water outlet port for filtered product water, and a brine outlet port for brine, the improvement comprising:

a pump coupled into the feed water inlet conduit between the source of feed water and the inlet port of the filter, said pump driven solely by including means the feed water under pressure for increasing the pressure of the feed water to a pressure greater than said predetermined pressure whereby the reverse osmosis filter receives feed water at increased pressure.

2. An improvement as defined in claim 1 wherein the pump has a brine inlet port and a brine outlet port with the brine inlet port coupled to the brine outlet port of the filter and a brine valve having open and closed positions for controlling the flow of brine from the brine inlet port to the brine outlet port of the pump.

An improvement as defined in claim 2 wherein the pump includes a housing having a cavity, a piston reciprocable in the housing to increase the pressure of the feed water, means for changing the position of the brine valve and means responsive to a change of position of the brine valve for reversing the direction of movement of the piston.

4. An improvement as defined in claim 3 wherein said means for changing the position of the brine valve includes means for resiliently drivingly coupling the brine valve and the piston.

5. An improvement as defined in claim 3 wherein the housing has a drain port and a feed water inlet port communicable with the source of feed water, the piston divides the cavity of the housing into a feed water inlet chamber communicating with the feed water inlet port of the housing and a reversing chamber communicating with the drain port of the housing and said reversing means includes conduit means coupling the brine outlet port of the pump to the drain port.

An improvement as defined in claim 3 wherein the housing has a feed water inlet port communicable with the source of feed water and a feed water outlet port coupled to the inlet port of the filter, the piston divides the cavity of the housing into a feed water inlet chamber communicating with the feed water inlet port and a feed water outlet chamber communicating with the feed water outlet port and said reversing means includes a check valve carried by the piston and openable to provide communication between said chambers.

7. An improvement as defined in claim 2 wherein the brine outlet port of the pump communicates with fluid at drain pressure when said brine valve is in said closed position and has surfaces exposed to brine and the fluid at drain pressure whereby the brine valve is held closed.

An improvement as defined in claim 1 wherein the pump includes a housing having a cavity, a piston reciprocable in the housing to increase the pressure of the feed water and to divide the cavity of the housing into a feed water inlet chamber communicating with the feed water inlet port and a feed water outlet chamber communicating with the feed water outlet port, and a check valve carried by the piston and openable to provide communication between said chambers.

An improvement as defined in claim 3 wherein the piston moves through a pumping stroke to increase the pressure of the feed water and a return stroke, said means for changing the position of the brine valve includes means for closing the brine valve after termination of the return stroke and before initiation of the next pumping stroke.

10. In a reverse osmosis system including a reverse osmosis filter with a reverse osmosis membrane and having an inlet port connectable to a source of feed water under a predetermined pressure via a feed water inlet conduit, a product water outlet port for filtered product water, and a brine outlet port for brine, the improvement comprising:

a pump coupled into the feed water inlet conduit between the source of feed water and the inlet port of the filter, said pump including means driven on a pumping stroke by the feed water under pressure for increasing the pressure of the feed water to a pressure greater than said predetermined pressure whereby the reverse osmosis filter receives feed water at increased pressure and said system includes a brine valve for blocking flow of brine from the reverse osmosis filter to the pressure increasing means during the pumping stroke, said system constructed so that brine does not contribute to increasing the pressure of the feed water during the pumping stroke.

An improvement as defined in claim 10 wherein the pressure increasing means has a return stroke during which it does not increase the pressure of the feed water above said predetermined pressure and means for opening said brine valve to alloy brine to flow to the pressure increasing means and to drain during said return stroke.

12. An improvement as defined in claim 11 including a spring which is stressed on the pumping stroke and which drives the pressure increasing means on the return stroke.

13. An improvement as defined in claim 12 wherein the pump includes a housing having a cavity, the pressure increasing means includes a piston reciprocable in the cavity on the pumping and return strokes.

14. An improvement as defined in claim 10 wherein the pressure increasing means has a passage therethrough which the feedwater can flow.

15. An improvement as defined in claim 14 including a check valve carried by the pressure increasing means for controlling the flow of feedwater through said passage through the pressure increasing means.

16. An improvement as defined in claim 10 including means for resiliently drivingly coupling the brine valve and the pressure increasing means whereby the pressure increasing means can operate the brine valve.

An improvement as defined in claim 10 wherein the pump includes a housing having a cavity, a feed water inlet port, a feed water outlet port and a reversing port, the pressure increasing means includes a differential area piston reciprocable in said housing through pumping and return strokes and dividing the cavity of the housing into an inlet chamber communicating with the feed water inlet port, an outlet chamber communicating with the outlet port and a reversing chamber communicating with the reversing port, said piston having a first relatively large area face in said inlet chamber, a second smaller area face in the outlet chamber and a reversing face in the reversing chamber whereby fluid in the inlet chamber can drive the piston on a pumping stroke and deliver fluid at increased pressure through the feed water outlet port to the inlet port of the reverse osmosis filter, the pump includes a brine conduit extending between the brine outlet port and the reversing port, the brine valve is in the conduit and the pump includes means driven by the piston for operating the brine valve.

In a reverse osmosis system including a reverse osmosis filter with a reverse osmosis membrane and having a pressurized water inlet port connectable to a source of feed water under a predetermined pressure via a feed water inlet conduit, a product water outlet port for filtered product water, and a brine outlet port for brine, the improvement comprising:

a pump including a housing having a cavity, a feed water inlet port, a feed water outlet port and a reversing port coupled into the feed water inlet conduit between the source of feed water and the inlet port of the filter, a differential area piston reciprocable in said housing through pumping and return strokes and dividing the cavity of the housing into an inlet chamber communicating with the feedwater inlet port, an outlet chamber communicating with the outlet port and a reversing chamber communicating with the reversing port, said piston having a first relatively large area face in said inlet chamber, a second smaller area face in the outlet chamber and a reversing face in the reversing chamber whereby fluid in the inlet chamber can drive the piston on a pumping stroke and deliver fluid at increased pressure through the feed water outlet port to the inlet port of the reverse osmosis filter;

a brine conduit extending between the brine outlet port and the reversing port;

a brine valve in said conduit; and

means driven by the piston for operating the brine valve.
