1. An apparatus for applying stress to cell cultures comprising:

  • at least one cell culture plate having one or more wells thereon, with each of said wells having a substantially planar base formed at least partially of an elastomeric membrane made of a biocompatible polyorganosiloxane composition, with said elastomeric membrane having an upper surface treated to permit cell growth and attachment thereto by means of the incorporation at said upper surface of a substance selected from the group consisting of an amine, a carboxylic acid, or elemental carbon, and vacuum means for controlling subjecting said elastomeric membrane to the pulling force of a vaccum.
