Abstract

The invention relates to an apparatus for accurately measuring the weight of a load carried by a truck body which is pivotally mounted on a truck frame. With the truck body in its lowered position, the apparatus is located along an interface between the truck frame with the load carried by the truck body. In order to measure the weight of the load, the apparatus includes pressure sensors which communicate the entire weight of the load to the truck frame. The pressure sensors provide an electrical signal proportional to the pressure exerted by the load on the apparatus. This electrical signal is processed to calculate the weight of the load carried in the truck body. By providing a pressure sensing apparatus at an interface between the load and truck frame, the weight on the load carried by the truck body can be continually monitored without interrupting the loading, hauling and dumping routine.

Claims

1. An apparatus for measuring the weight of a load, said apparatus resting on a support surface and comprising:

at least one tubing placed on said support surface and filled with fluid to an extent less than the full capacity of said tubing;

a weight-receiving surface mounted on said at least one tubing such that the weight of a load placed on said weight-receiving surface is transferred to said support surface via said at least one tubing, whereby the transfer of the weight of said load occurs substantially uniformly and continuously along the length of said at least one tubing;

means (1) for maintaining a linear relationship between the pressure of said fluid in said at least one tubing and the weight of said load;

means (2) responsive to the pressure of the fluid in said at least one tubing for producing an indication of the weight of said load; and

means (3) for maintaining a substantially parallel relationship between said weight-receiving surface and said support surface.

An apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein said means (1) includes an oblong cross-sectional area of said at least one tubing so as to substantially maintain a constant area of contact between said at least one tubing and both said support and said weight-receiving surfaces for a full range of weights of said load.

An apparatus as set forth in claim 2 wherein in order for said means (1) to provide a substantially constant area of contact between said at least one tubing and both said support and said weight-receiving surfaces over a full range of weights of said load, said means (1) includes a plane surface of predetermined area integral with said weight-receiving surface for directly contacting said at least one length of tubing.

4. An apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein said means (2) includes a processor responsive to electronic data from a pressure sensor in communication with said fluid in said at least one tubing.

5. An apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein said weight-receiving surface has a substantially inverted and U-shaped cross section and includes two opposing side surfaces that maintain said weight-receiving surface in a stable position on said at least one tubing.

6. An apparatus as set forth in claim 4 wherein said processor includes means for selecting the units of said indication of the weight of said load.

7. An apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein said means (3) includes a tubing substantially similar to said at least one tubing and placed on said support surface in a substantially parallel relationship with said at least one tubing.

8. An apparatus as set forth in claim 7 wherein said tubing and said at least one tubing extend the length of said weight-receiving surface and are each clamped at a central location in order to divide each tubing into two chambers.
