Abstract

In apparatus for thermally transferring ink from a ribbon, having backing and ink donor layers, to a letter, wherein the apparatus includes a frame, a thermal printhead, structure connected to the frame for controlling the printhead, and a roller, wherein the printhead is disposable in a non-printing position permitting a ribbon to be located between the printhead and roller and in a printing position in which the printhead is in engagement with the backing layer of a ribbon, and wherein the roller is adapted for rotation when in engagement with a letter fed between the roller and a ribbon, an improvement for urging a ribbon and letter into engagement with one another, the improvement comprising: the printhead controlling structure including structure for resiliently supporting the printhead for urging the ink donor layer of a ribbon into contact with a letter when the printhead is disposed in the printing position; and the roller including a body portion adapted to flex when engaging a letter for urging a letter into contact with the ink donor layer of a ribbon.

Claims

1. In apparatus for thermally transferring ink from a ribbon having backing and ink donor layers to a letter, wherein the apparatus includes a frame, a thermal printhead, a roller and controlling means connected to the frame for controlling the printhead, the printhead being disposable in a non-printing position permitting a ribbon to be located between the printhead and roller and in a printing position in which the printhead is in engagement with the backing layer of a ribbon, and wherein the roller is adapted for rotation when in engagement with a letter fed between the roller and a ribbon, an improvement for urging a ribbon and letter of non-uniform thickness into engagement with one another, the improvement wherein said controlling means comprises a first member carried by said frame and movable axially toward and away from said roller, said first member having a lower part, said printhead being pivotally mounted to said lower part,

means engaging and resiliently biasing said first member and printhead axially toward said roller, said printhead thereby resiliently urging said ribbon toward said roller,

said printhead being pivotable such that letters of non-uniform thickness can be fed between and be in continuous contact with said roller and ribbon while thermal transfer of ink occurs.

2. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said roller has an outer portion of cylindrical shape adapted to flex when engaging the bottom surface of a letter of non-uniform thickness for urging said letter'"'"'s top surface into contact with the ink donor layer of a ribbon.

3. The improvement according to claim 2, wherein the roller body portion is made of a flexible material and has at least one channel formed therein for augmenting the flexibility of the roller body portion when the roller body portion is disposed in engagement with a letter.

4. The improvement according to claim 3, wherein the at least one channel extends into the roller body portion from the outer surface and defines a spiral channel extending longitudinally of the length of the roller body portion.

The improvement according to claim 4, wherein the roller body portion has opposed ends, the at least one channel includes two channels, and one of said two channels being a clockwise extending spiral channel and the other of said two channels being a counter-clockwise extending spiral channel as viewed from a given one of said ends of the roller body portion.

6. The improvement according to claim 3, wherein the at least one channel extends into the roller body portion from the outer surface thereof and coaxially of the axis of the roller.

7. The improvement according to claim 3, wherein the at least one channel extends into the roller body portion from the outer surface thereof and lengthwise of the roller body portion.

8. the improvement according to claim 3, wherein the at least one channel extends into the roller body portion from the outer surface thereof and parallel to the axis of the roller.

9. The improvement according to claim 2, wherein the roller body portion is made of a flexible material and has at least one aperture formed therein and extending longitudinally of the length of the roller body portion.

10. The improvement according to claim 9, wherein the at least one aperture has an arcuately-shaped transverse cross-section.

11. The improvement according to claim 9, wherein the at least one aperture includes a plurality of apertures.

The improvement according to claim 1 wherein said controlling means further comprises an arm having a first part slidably connected to said frame providing movement of said printhead between said printing and non-printing positions, and a second part engaging said printhead and allowing said axial movement of said printhead relative to said arm toward and away from said ribbon.

13. The improvement according to claim 12 wherein said roller has an outer body portion of cylindrical shape adapted to flex when engaging the bottom surface of a letter of non-uniform thickness for urging said letter'"'"'s top surface into contact with the ink donor layer of a ribbon.

14. The improvement according to claim 12 wherein said first member is a shaft, said controlling means further comprising a first spring engaging said shaft and printhead and biasing said printhead toward said ribbon and roller.

15. The improvement according to claim 14 wherein said controlling means further comprises a second spring engaging said shaft and said printhead and biasing said printhead to remain in an unpivoted position relative to said lower part of said shaft.

16. The improvement according to claim 15 wherein said first spring is an coil spring that surrounds said shaft, and said second spring is a leaf spring having a central part engaging said shaft and end parts engaging said printhead.
