A therapeutic composition for orally administering a drug to the gastrointestinal tract of an animal, said therapeutic composition comprising (1) from 25 ng to 1.5 g of a non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory analgesic that is a member selected from the group consisting of non-steroidal propionic, non-steroidal acetic, non-steroidal fenamic, non-steroidal biphenylcarboxylic, and non-steroidal oxicam drugs, (2) from 1% to 60% of a polyethylene oxide, and (3) from 1% to 60% of a carboxypolymethylene polymer, which (1), (2) and (3) are concomitantly administered to the gastrointestinal tract wherein (2) and (3) cooperate for reducing the concentration of (1) in contact with the gastrointestinal mucosa.
