Paging system with commands for changing functionality of a paging receiver
First Claim
1. A paging system comprising:
- (a) a transmitter for transmitting pages which are each comprised of an identification number having multiple digits which identify a paging receiver to receive a page, at least one command selected from a plurality of system commands with each system command specifying a different function to be performed by a paging receiver having an identification number which matches the identification number of the page and a plurality of characters with the page modulating a carrier which is broadcast by the transmitter and all pages transmitted to each individual paging receiver having an identical identification number;
(b) means for receiving pages to be broadcast by the transmitter which include an identification number and a plurality of characters;
(c) a memory, coupled to the means for receiving, for storing the received pages to be broadcast;
(d) a plurality of subscriber files, each subscriber file, having a plurality of fields of information which are stored for each subscriber of the paging system, including an identification number which identifies a subscriber and which identifies the paging receiver to receive pages charged to the subscriber and a service option field having at least one selectible service option which, if selected, each cause the system to add at least one command to a page to be broadcast by the transmitter to cause a different function to be performed by the paging receiver upon receipt of the page in processing characters contained in the page;
(e) means for receiving requests to program the service option field during operation of the system; and
(f) control means, coupled to the memory, the subscriber files, the means for receiving pages, the means for receiving requests to program the service option field, and the transmitter, for dynamically programming the service options of the service option field of a subscriber file in response to each request to program the service option field of the subscriber file and causing at least one command from a service option field having an identification number matching the identification number accompanying each page to be added to the page prior to broadcast with the at least one command being determined by any selected service options.

Abstract
A paging network is disclosed which utilizes a plurality of distributed switches to transmit pages on a non-real time basis to achieve efficient and low cost transmission. Each of the switches processes packets of pages received from the network. Each of the switches also processes pages into packets of pages to be transmitted to another switch in the network or into batches of pages to be transmitted by a local paging service if the switch is a local switch. The network dynamically programs the reception channel(s) of the paging receivers in response to traffic conditions of a local switch or in accordance with service options specified by a subscriber to a local paging service. The digits of the paging receiver identification code are transmitted in an order of increasing significance to conserve battery life of the paging receiver. Pages may be initiated by placing a local call to any lata switch in the network and service options may be varied by placing of a local call to a lata switch.
