Abstract

A hot bearing simulator is provided for verifying the proper operation of hot box detectors in a dynamic fashion. The hot bearing simulator employs a temperature controller and heater means associated with various axles of a rolling carriage. The heaters are adjusted such that a hot box detector will be verified to determine if it is able to sense when the absolute temperature of left or right wheel bearings exceeds a first predetermined temperature or, alternatively, when the difference in temperature between a left and right wheel bearing differ by a second predetermined amount.

Claims

1. An apparatus for dynamically simulating the presence of a hot bearing on railroad rolling stock in order to verify the operation of hot box detectors comprising:

a moveable carriage having at least a first axle;

left heater means associated with said first axle for simulating a hot bearing on the left side of said first axle;

right heater means associated with said first axle for simulating a hot bearing on the right side of said first axle;

means for sensing the ambient temperature; and

means for controlling the temperature of each heater means to first predetermined temperature above ambient.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein each of said left heater means and said right heater means comprises:

a first heater for simulating a bearing traveling in a leading direction; and

a second heater for simulating a bearing traveling in a trailing direction.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said first and said second heaters are mounted generally vertically above each rail for verifying rail-mounted hot box detectors.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein each of said left heater means and said right heater means further comprises:

a third heater means, aligned outboard of said first heater means, for simulating a wheel bearing traveling in said leading direction; and

a fourth heater for simulating a bearing traveling in said trailing direction.

5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein said third and said fourth heaters are mounted outboard of said first and said second heaters for verifying ballast-mounted hot box detectors.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said first predetermined temperature is above about 170°

F. above ambient temperature.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein said first predetermined temperature is about 200°

F. above ambient temperature.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising:

a second axle, said means for sensing the ambient temperature being mounted proximate to said second axle.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein said means for sensing the ambient temperature is mounted proximate to one side of said second axle.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising:

a second axle and a third axle, each parallel to said first axle, and wherein said means for sensing ambient temperature further comprises;

a first temperature sensor mounted proximate to one end of said second axle; and

a second temperature sensor mouonted proximate to an opposite end of said third axle.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 further comprising:

means responsive to said first and said second temperature sensors for averaging the temperature sensed by each, the ambient temperature being determined as the average of said sensed temperatures.

12. The apparatus of claim 10 further comprising:

right heater means associated with said second axle for simulating a hot bearing on the right side of said second axle;

means for controlling the temperature of said right heater means to a second predetermined temperature above ambient.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 further comprising:

left heater means associated with said third axle for simulating a hot bearing on the left side of said third axle; and

means for controlling the temperature of said left heater means to said second predetermined temperature above ambient.

14. The apparatus of claims 13 wherein said second predetermined temperature is about 140°

F.
