Paging system with dynamically programmable reception frequencies
First Claim
1. A paging system for transmitting a plurality of different commands by RF transmission from a transmitter to a paging receiver, each different command including a paging receiver identification code and each different command defining a different function to be performed by the paging receiver receiving the command and having a field uniquely identifying the command, the different commands including at least one command specifying processing to be performed on pages comprised of characters transmitted with the command and at least one channel programming command specifying a change in RF channel to be received by a paging receiver receiving the channel programming command comprising:
- (a) means for generating a signal to initiate the generation of a channel programming command for changing at least one channel of a paging receiver receiving the channel programming command; and
(b) means, responsive to the means for generating a signal, for generating the channel programming command to change at least one channel to be received by the paging receiver to which the channel programming command is addressed.

Abstract
A paging network is disclosed which utilizes a plurality of distributed switches to transmit pages on a non-real time basis to achieve efficient and low cost transmission. Each of the switches processes packets of pages received from the network. Each of the switches also processes pages into packets of pages to be transmitted to another switch in the network or into batches of pages to be transmitted by a local paging service if the switch is a local switch. The network dynamically programs the reception channel(s) of the paging receivers in response to traffic conditions of a local switch or in accordance with service options specified by a subscriber to a local paging service. The digits of the paging receiver identification code are transmitted in an order of increasing significance to conserve battery life of the paging receivers. Pages may be initiated by placing a local call to any lata switch in the network and service options may be varied by placing of a local call to a lata switch.

25. A paging network, including a plurality of connected paging system with pages being transmitted between the systems, each paging system including a paging service, a plurality of subscriber files, and a transmitter, each subscriber file identifying a subscriber of the paging service by an identification number, each paging system for transmitting a channel programming command by RF transmission from a transmitter associated with the paging system to a paging receiver identified in the subscriber files of the paging system, each channel programming command including a paging receiver identification code, and specifying a RF channel to be received by a paging receiver receiving the channel programming command when the paging receiver is receiving pages broadcast by another paging system, each paging system comprising:
-
(a) means for generating a signal to initiate the generation of a channel programming command for specifying at least one channel on which broadcasts from another paging system are to be received by a paging receiver receiving the channel programming command in response to reading a subscriber file containing an identification number identical to the paging receiver identification code identifying the paging receiver to receive the channel programming command; and (b) means, responsive to the means for generating a signal, for generating the channel programming command to specify the at least one channel to be received by the paging receiver when the paging receiver is located within broadcast range of the another paging system in the network and for transmitting the channel programming command from the transmitter associated with the paging system to the paging receiver prior to moving of the paging receiver into the broadcast range of the another paging receiver. - View Dependent Claims (26, 27)

28. A paging system including a paging service which broadcasts pages on at least two channels, a transmitter for transmitting a channel programming command to a paging receiver including a paging receiver identification code and specifying a change in RF channel to be received by the paging receiver receiving the channel programming command from one of the channels of the paging service to another of the channels of the paging service comprising:
-
(a) means for generating a signal to initiate the generation of a channel programming command for changing the paging receiver from receiving the one channel to another of the channels in response to paging traffic on the at least two channels used for broadcasting pages by the paging service permitting additional pages to be broadcast on the another of the channels; and (b) means, responsive to the means for generating a signal, for generating the channel programming command to change the paging receiver to which the channel programming command is addressed from receiving the one channel to receive the another of the channels and for causing transmission of the channel programming command by the transmitter of the paging service to the paging receiver. - View Dependent Claims (29)

30. A paging system including a paging service, a plurality of subscriber files, each subscriber file identifying a subscriber of the paging service by an identification number and a transmitter for transmitting pages on at least one radio common carrier channel, and at least one additional paging means which transmits pages to subscribers of the paging means on at least one non-radio common carrier channel, the paging service transmitting a channel programming command by RF transmission from the transmitter to a paging receiver, including a paging receiver identification code, and specifying a change in RF channel to be received by a paging receiver receiving the channel programming command comprising:
-
(a) means for generating a signal to initiate the generation of a channel programming command for changing at least one channel of a paging receiver the channel programming command in response to a communication containing an identification number of a subscriber identified within the subscriber files; and (b) means, responsive to the means for generating a signal, for generating the channel programming command to cause the paging receiver to which the channel programming command is addressed to receive pages on the at least one radio common carrier and causing the transmitter to transmit the channel programming command to the paging receiver.
