Electronic lock system with improved data dissemination
First Claim
1. An electronic lockbox system comprising:
- a lockbox having a secure compartment and a lockable shackle;
an electronic key;
means for communicating access data between the lockbox and key;
means for determining from said communicated access data whether to authorize entry into the secure compartment of the lockbox;
memory means in the lockboxfor storing operational data relating to system operation;
means in the lockbox for storing first timeliness indicator data indicative of timeliness of the operational data in the lockbox memory means;
memory means in the key for storing operational data relating to system operation; and
means in the key for storing timeliness indicator data indicative of the timeliness of the operational data in the key memory means;
comparison means for comparing said first and second timeliness indicator data to determine if operational data in the key is more timely than operational data in the lockbox; and
means responsive to the comparison means for transferring operational data and associated timeliness indicator data from the key to the lockbox.

Abstract
An electronic lock system is provided with a "lockout list" that identifies keys that are to be prevented from opening system locks. Date coded lockout lists are carried in the memories of both the system'"'"'s locks and keys. When a lock and key engage, the date codes of the lock and key lists are compared to determine which list is that most up-to-date. This list is then transferred into the other unit, overwirting that unit'"'"'s stale list. Subsequent interactions of either of these units with other locks and keys will further spread the most timely lockout list data. By this arrangement, new lockout lists can be disseminated throughout a lock system simply by loading them into one or more keys. As these keys are used with locks, and those locks used with other keys, the list will spread throughout the system. A variety of other operational features are also disclosed.

6. An electronic lock system comprising:
-
a lock for restricting access to a secure area; an electronic key; means for communicating access data between the lock and the key; means for determining from said communicated access data whether to authorize entry into the secure area associated with the lock; memory means in the lock for storing lockout list data that identifies keys that are to be denied access to the secure area; memory means in the key for storing lockout list data identifying keys that are to be denied access to secure areas; and means for determining electronically whether the memory in the lock should be updated from lockout list data stored in the key and, if so, for transferring said data from the key memory means to the lock memory means. - View Dependent Claims (7, 8)

9. An electronic lockbox system comprising:
-
a lockbox having a secure compartment and a lockable shackle; an electronic key; means for communicating access data between the lockbox and the key; means for determining from said communicated access data whether to authorize entry into the secure compartment of the lockbox; memory means in the lockbox for storing lockout list data that identifies keys that are to be denied access to the secure compartment; memory means in the key for storing lockout list data identifying a key that is to be denied access to a lockbox compartment; means for determining electronically whether the memory in the lockbox should be updated from lockout list data stored in the key and, if so, for transferring said data from the key memory means to the lockbox memory means; means for determining electronically whether the memory means in the key should be updated from lockout list data stored in the lockbox memory means and, if so, for transferring said data from the lockbox memory means to the key memory means so that the key can thereafter update other lockboxes with said data; means in the key for storing key identification data that identifies the key by agent, broker and board; means for transferring said key identification data to the lockbox; calendar means in the lockbox for generating data indicative of the current date and time; means in the lockbox for storing said key identification data transferred from the key and the calendar data generated by the calendar means to compile thereby a lockbox activity log of lockbox activity; means for transferring said lockbox activity log from the lockbox to the key; and modem means comprising; key coupling means for establishing communications with the key; means for coupling over telephone lines; and means for transmitting the lockbox activity log from the key over the telephone lines.

10. In an electronic lock system that includes a plurality of locks and keys, each lock having a secure area associated therewith and a memory for storing lockout list data that identifies keys that are to be denied access to the secure area, a method for disseminating lockout list data through the system, comprising the steps:
-
storing lockout list data identifying a key that is to be denied access to secure areas in a memory in a key; coupling said key and a lck; and determining electronically whether the memory in the lock should be updated from lockout list data stored in the key and, if so, transferring said data from the key memory to the lock memory. - View Dependent Claims (11)
