A method of protecting proteins or other biological macromolecules against denaturation during drying, comprising subjecting an aqueous system containing the protein or other biological macromolecule to drying at a temperature above freezing in the presence of trehalose in an amount between about 0.05 and 20 weight percent based on the total weight of said aqueous system.
