1. A rate-responsive pacemaker comprising means adapted to a patient'"'"'heart for pulsing at a controlled rate;

  • a bipolar lead having tip and ring electrodes for coupling said pulsing means to the patient'"'"'s heart, said pulsing means extending pacing current pulses to said tip electrode, said tip electrode being positionable on the heart wall and said ring electrode being positionable in a blood vessel in the vicinity of the patient'"'"'s pleural cavity;

    means for periodically applying measuring current pulses between said ring electrode and a reference point in said pacemaker;

    means for measuring the blood impedance between said tip electrode and said reference point responsive to the application of a measuring current pulse between said ring electrode and said reference point, as the blood impedance varies as a function of the patient'"'"'s pleural pressure;

    means responsive to said measuring means for determining the patient'"'"'s minute volume; and

    means for changing said controlled rate in accordance with the patient'"'"'s minute volume.
