1. Apparatus for analyzing the concentration of a selected gas in a stream of gases containing the selected gas, said apparatus comprising:

  • source means for emitting discrete pulses of radiant energy of a specified intensity and of such a wavelength that said energy is absorbed by said selected gas but not by the other gases present in the stream being analyzed, detector means for detecting the intensity of the radiant energy after said energy has passed through the gases being analyzed and providing a signal indicative of the intensity of the radiant energy detected by said detector means, and means for converting said signal to one indicative of the concentration of the selected gas in the stream of gases being analyzed, said detector means including a detector and said apparatus further comprising means for applying an electrical bias to said detector to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of said detector, said bias applying means comprising a flyback transformer having a primary winding and a secondary winding connected to said detector means, means connected to said secondary winding for providing an error signal, means for integrating said error signal with respect to a reference signal to thereby generate an integrated signal, and means employing said integrated signal to control the voltage across the primary winding of said transformer.
