1. A luminescent compound comprising a polysubstituted aryl acridinium ester selected from the group having the following structure:

  • ##STR5## where R1 is an alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, or aryl group;

    R2, R3, R5, or R7 are a hydrogen, amino, carboxyl, hydroxyl, alkoxyl, nitro, or halide group;

    R4 or R8 are an alkyl group;

    R6 represents the following substituent;

    
    
    space="preserve" listing-type="equation">R.sub.6 =-R.sub.9 -R.sub.10where R9 is not required but if present is an alkyl, aryl, or aralkyl group, and R10 is selected from the following;

    ##STR6## X is CH3 SO4-, OSO2 F-, a halide, OSO2 CF3-, OSO2 C4 F9-, ##STR7## R is alkyl, aryl, aralkyl; and

    finally R5, R6, and R7 substituent positions on the phenoxy ring are interchangeable.
