A metal halide arc discharge lamp comprising an arc tube supported within an outer vitreous envelope by metal frame parts having a nickel surface wherein the arc tube contains a fill comprising mercury, a sodium halide and an inert starting gas and wherein an oxidizing agent is present within the inside of said outer envelope in an amount sufficient to release oxygen in an amount equivalent to about 2 ×
