1. A decoder comprising:
- a board for connection to a computer, said board carrying circuitry including;
input means for receiving a video signal representative of pixels which can be displayed on a screen, some of said pixels being representative of data;
means for detecting a horizontal sync pulse in the video signal received by said input means;
means, coupled to said input means, for converting said video signal into a digital signal;
a shift register, coupled to said means for converting, for successively storing digital bits extracted from said digital signal;
timer means for successively causing said digital bits to be clocked into said shift register at predetermined time delays after said horizontal sync pulse is detected; and
means for providing said computer with a parallel data byte formed by said digital bits in said shift register.

Abstract
A system for simultaneously using a video signal to provide a video picture and computer data. At the transmitting end, a video signal is digitized and then modified by substituting digital signals representative of computer data for those representative of video pixels. The modified signal is reconverted to an analog signal and transmitted to a receiver. The receiver displays the video picture corresponding to the modified signal and extracts the computer data so that they may be provided to the computer. The computer can thus be controlled by the computer data as the video picture is being displayed.

5. A method for simultaneously providing a video picture and controlling a computer comprising the steps of:

providing a video signal giving a color for each pixel in a video picture; modifying the video signal to create a modified video signal by replacing portions of said video signal with digital signal portions representative of computer data; sending the modified video signal; receiving the modified video signal; displaying a video picture corresponding to the modified video signal; and converting the modified video signal to form a digital received signal; and extracting digital bits from the digital signal portions representative of computer data on the digital received signal, said step of extracting digital bits being performed by the steps of; detecting a horizontal sync signal, waiting a predetermined period of time, and then shifting a digital bit from the digital received signal into a shift register. - View Dependent Claims (6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14)

15. A system for simultaneously providing computer data and a video picture comprising;
