In a radiation detection system having a detector element a window structure for transmitting radiation to the detector element comprisinga frame,a plurality of upstanding spaced-apart ribs held in place by the frame, wherein the tops of the ribs terminate generally in a common plane and wherein the frame and ribs are integrally formed of a single piece of material, anda thin film of material disposed on the tops of the ribs to span over the gaps therebetween for passing the radiation to be detected, andwherein the single piece of material is silicon, and wherein the ribs are formed by etching.
