1. A drug delivery device comprising an electrically conducting self-doped carbozole polymer of the formula:

  • ##STR4## wherein A is a bifunctional molecule capable of bonding to a positively charged molecule at one end and is capable of bonding to a flexible spacer group Z at another end, Z is a flexible spacer group capable of bonding to an anionic group A at one end and is capable of bonding to either to an aromatic nitrogen or electron withdrawing or electron donating group at another end, E is a bifunctional molecule capable of bonding to nitrogen at one end and is capable of bonding to a flexible spacer group Z at another end, X is a positively charged drug molecule, and n is at least 2, in the form of a film embedded in an electrolyte, a cathode and an anode operatively associated, respectively, with said polymer film and said electrolyte, and a source of electrical power operatively associated with said cathode and anode.
