1. A surgical set for the insertion of an endoprosthesis into a space between two vertebral bodies, comprising in combination:
- an endoprosthesis having two stop plates to be secured in said space and a sliding core to be arranged between the plates, each plate having a peripheral edge; and
a spreading forceps (9) which have a front end formed as spreading jaws, each spreading jaw (10,
11) having a substantially U-shaped recess (19) surrounding one stop plate (3) on three sides and gripping the peripheral edge of the stop plate, the thickness of the two spreading jaws (10,
11) in the spreading direction being substantially identical to the thickness of the two stop plates (3) when secured in the spaces between the vertebral bodies.

Abstract
The surgical instrument set for the insertion of intervertebral endoprostheses, which consist of two stop plates and a sliding core to be arranged between them, is characterized in that it has spreading forceps (9) which have, at their front end on each spreading jaw (10, 11), an essentially U-shaped recess surrounding one stop plate on three sides and gripping the edge, the thickness of the spreading jaws (10, 11) in the spreading direction being essentially identical to the thickness of the stop plates.

- 13. The combination comprising a surgical forceps and an intervertebral device having two stop members each having a stop plate for bearing against a respective vertebral body, wherein each stop plate has an external edge along at least two opposed lateral sides, and wherein said forceps includes two opposed, elongated spreading jaws for simultaneously carrying said two stop members, respectively, each spreading jaw having a thickness in the spreading direction and defining a substantially U-shaped recess adapted to surround one of the stop plates on three sides and to engage the edge of said one plate, the thickness in the spreading direction of the spreading jaw which defines said recess being substantially identical to the thickness of said one stop plate, whereby the two stop members can be intervertebrally inserted simultaneously with the jaws and the spreading force of the jaws can be transmitted through the plates to the respective vertebral bodies.

15. A surgical instrument set for insertion of an endoprosthesis in the space between two vertebral bodies, comprising:
-
an endoprosthesis having two stop plates and a sliding core to be arranged between the plates, each stop plate having a portion of given thickness to occupy some of said space and an external edge along at least two opposed lateral sides of said portion; a forceps having, a pair of opposed, elongated, substantially parallel spreading jaws for carrying said two stop plates simultaneously, each spreading jaw defining a substantially U-shaped recess adapted to surround said first portion of one stop plate on three sides and to engage the respective external edge, the thickness in the spreading direction of the spreading jaw which defines said recess being substantially no greater than the thickness of said portion of the respective stop plate and means for spreading the jaws in parallel while the stop plates are carried thereon in said space and against said vertebral bodies to separate the stop plates; and a holding member for sliding a core between the separated stop plates, the holding member including a substantially rod like handle and a pair of resilient holding elements for surrounding the sliding core periphery over an angular range greater than 180 degrees. - View Dependent Claims (16)

17. A surgical instrument set for the insertion of an intervertebral endoprostheses between two axially spaced apart vertebral bodies defining opposed vertebral surfaces, comprising:
-
two stop plates to be inserted into the space between and secured to the opposed surfaces of said bodies, each plate having projection means on one side for penetrating one of the vertebral surfaces, substantially planar load transfer means for bearing against said one surface, said load transfer means having a peripheral edge, and wall means defining a socket on the other side of the plate; forceps having two jaws for carrying two respective stop plates one on top of the other for insertion into the space between the bodies, the jaws being hinged to spread the plates axially part in parallel in said space and against said surfaces, each jaw including generally U-shaped means for supporting one of the stop plates by the peripheral edge such that the plate sockets face each other, the U-shaped means having a thickness in the spreading direction substantially equal to the thickness of the load transfer means and the wall means; and a sliding core for insertion between the wall means after the plates have been spread apart axially by the jaws.
