Abstract

An identity card is provided with a character set usable as a printing block, whereby the "natural foamability" that laser action brings about in the plastic materials commonly used for identity cards, such as PVC and polycarbonate, is exploited to obtain a relief height sufficient for a clear impression of the characters. The standard total height of the embossed characters relative to the rest of the card surface is reached by an additional deformation of the card body in the embossed character area so as to form flat underlying the characters.

Claims

1. In an identity card including a main card body having a plastic surface area having at least one character or symbol thereon raised to a given height above the surrounding card surface for enabling the card body to be used as a printing block, the improvement comprising:

said card including a raised plateau area at least underlying said character or symbol, said plateau area being raised in relief above an adjacent surface portion of the card body to provide a portion only of said given height of said character or symbol;

said plastic surface area including at least a portion corresponding with said character or symbol expandable by laser irradiation;

said at least one raised character or symbol comprising an area of said plastic surface area that is locally expanded by laser irradiation above the underlying plateau area to provide the remainder of said given height.

The improvement in an identity card as claimed in claim 1, including an opaque layer underlying the plastic surface area, said plastic surface area comprising a material that is normally transparent in the visible spectral range and having properties that cause its appearance to be altered upon exposure to laser irradiation.

3. The improvement in an identity card as claimed in claim 2, wherein the plastic surface area comprises a pair of superimposed plastic surface layers, the outer layer of which having lower laser irradiation absorbent ability than the inner layer.

The improvement in an identity card as claimed in any one of claims 1, 2 or 3 including a depression in a surface of the card body opposite said raised plateau area, and a supporting structure extending from the bottom area of the depression to the plane of the adjacent card surface whereby the card is reinforced against excess deformation beneath the at least one character when the card is used as printing block.

5. The improvement in an identity card as claimed in any one of claims 1, 2 or 3, wherein said given height is approximately 0.46 mm, with the majority of said height provided by said plateau area.

6. The improvement in an identity card as claimed in any one of claims 1, 2 or 3, wherein said identity card is provided with laser generated writing outside the area of said raised plateau, said writing being visible but not in relief above the card surface.

7. The improvement in an identity card as claimed in any one of claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the identity card includes information in addition to said raised character or symbol applied by laser irradiation in a different form of representation than produced by said laser irradiation.

8. The improvement in an identity card according to any one of claims 1, 2 or 3, including visible embossed microrelief at least in the area of said raised plateau area.

The improvement in an identity card as claimed in any one of claims 1, 2 or 3, including a depression in a surface of the card body opposite said raised plateau area, and a supporting structure extending from the bottom area of the depression to the adjacent card surface whereby the card is reinforced against excess deformation beneath the at least one character when the card is used as a printing block;

the combined height of the raised plateau above the adjacent surface portion of the card body and the height of the at least one character or symbol above the plateau resulting from laser irradiation and local expansion being approximately 0.46 mm;

said identity card being provided with laser generated writing outside the area of said raised plateau;

said writing being visible but not in relief above the card surface;

said identity card including visible information in addition to said raised character or symbol applied by laser radiation in a different form of representation than produced by said laser irradiation; and

visible embossed microrelief provided on the card at least in the area of said raised plateau area.
