1. A reusable thermometer for measuring the temperature of a living being comprising:

  • a rigid housing having a hollow probe extending outwardly therefrom in a distal direction;

    temperature sensing means located at the distal end of said probe;

    said housing holding display means and electrical means for converting the temperature measured by said temperature sensing means into a read-out on said display means, said electrical means adapted to engage a battery to facilitate operation of said thermometer;

    conductor means for providing electrical communication between said electrical means and said temperature sensing means;

    resilient soft cover means covering said probe and a portion of said housing to form a gripping surface for the user while allowing visualization of said display means, said resilient cover means being softer than said probe;

    said probe being more flexible in response to bending force than said housing wherein said probe is capable of maintaining its shape while said thermometer is being held by said gripping surface and capable of deflecting in response to forces experienced during oral temperature measurement; and

    said probe and said cover means being constructed so that a force of 22 grams applied perpendicularly to the longitudinal axis of said thermometer at said distal end of said probe, while the thermometer is being firmly held by said gripping surface, will cause said distal end of said probe to deflect within the range of 1.0 mm to 25 mm in the direction of said force.
